It simply says "ATF" on the label with additional wording:

"This ATF can be be used to in vehicles formerly serviced with Dexron III or Mercon".

As I recall the old label said Dexron III/Mercon ATF.

I assume by now that all Mercon III and Dexron licenses have expired, so that is why Shell changed the label.

Those licenses have expired so there is now no check by the OEMs that those fluids are the same as the formulation that was originally tested and approved.
Good luck at guessing what's in the bottle!
The same goes for any other unlicensed product.

The Shell ATF should be fine for a generic GM or Mercon application.

I guess it's pretty much trusting a lubricant company to make a lubricant vs. GM to....... well my last S-10 Blazer did the speaking for GM.

Shell oil has been in the petroleum business since 1907 so I figure they know how to make a bottle of oil at least as well as GM knows how to make cars (1908).

Then again ... I own Toyotas and use Amsoil/Mobil1.
