I got maybe 5-6 years out of my last ryobi hedge trimmer. I liked the small size, and standardized batteries are good. It was challenged in the end by lack of power, constant jamming, and finally the handle failed from so much manhandling to free it from jammed bushes. We have a lot of trees posing as bushes, and the trimmer gets a workout, borderline above its weight class.

I fretted a good bit. I really didn’t want to adopt a new battery system yet…. Ego 64 volt or ryobi 40, but wasnt sure about staying with the 18v. In the end, the brushless 18v got the nod. It is a significant improvement over the former one. theres a lot more power, though it’s geared down a bit which reduces the speed one can guide it through at. It never jammed once today on some bush limbs approaching a half inch. The newer handle is a little sturdier, but not by much. If I can get another 5-6 years, it will be enough. It’s better than what I had and not as heavy as the larger units.

This is great info! I am currently shopping my options for a unit capable of trimming some large privets (up to 3/4"). My old 20V B&D doesn't have quite enough power any more! I was leaning toward the Ryobi 40V but will definitely consider the 18V brushless. After all, I have a number of batteries and tools in that line.
