New rotors/ceramic pads...noise when hot.

Hello all,

I finally got around to replacing the badly worn (but silent) brakes on my '97 Grand Cherokee that were from the previous owner. Had a local shop replace the pads, rotors, parking brake and fluid.

Pads: Raybestos advanced tech ceramic pads
Rotors: Raybestos advanced tech rotors

I didn't notice any noise on the way home from the shop (only a mile or so from my place) and when I went to go bed them in later that night, I noticed that there was a very slight screeching. Went ahead and did the bed-in (10 near stops from 40mph, then drove on the highway for 10 minutes without stopping). After the 8th stop or so, I could smell the brakes.

But I'm noticing that there is a screeching sound when the brakes are pressed and have been warmed up/driven a while, but no noise at all when they are cold for the first few miles.

Should I attempt to bed-in again, give it more time or take it to the shop this weekend and ask them to look at it?

I had the same problem recently. I put Wearever Gold cermaics on my Taurus. No amount of bedding in helped. Noise would not go away. Took them back after a week.


Went up a grade to their Wearever Platinum ceramic. Much better.

It may be normal they may still be wearing in, I noticed when I installed my semi metallic pads and rotors for a while they made noise... now its all gone. You may take it back to the shop to see if something is wrong.. I have had the little clips on my brakes get bent before and cause noise, Ive also heard of the metal covers behind rotors getting bent and causing a squeaking noise.

Is the vehicle 4 wheel disc or just front? I assume the front was replaced?

I am not sure you needed to bed-in the brakes. Others may disagree, but on high quality pads for street use, I do not think you need to bed them in.

For $3 more you could have gotten Akebono Pro-Act.

Ive had the same pads before on the Acura, no noise. Currently running Wearever Platinum Pads with Wearever rotors and REALLY like this combo. No warping and quiet efficient and fast braking. Good pedal feel too, better than the Raybestos pads ( not sure if it was because I was using Duralast rotors with them or what, but man brakes were like an on/off switch instead of a gradual linear brake progression )

All four are discs and all were replaced. Picked this combo of rotor and pads because I got a good deal on them.

I'm mainly curious as to why I have no noise when the brakes are cold (hard braking, easy braking) but have the noise when the brakes are warm. If that's a function of ceramic pads or a way to help diagnose a problem.

That's what the Wearever Gold ceramics did. Noise and grinding when hot.

The Wearever Platinums are much better all around. So far zero noise.

Just as an FYI for anyone that looks up these pads with the search feature.

After putting about 2k on the pads, reinstalled, relubed, checked, nothing worked. The noise got louder with more time on them, always when the pad warmed up.

Finally replaced them with some Centric ceramic pads, no more noise. A little less stopping power than the Raybestos but these are silent. Too bad, wanted to like the Raybestos ones.

Akebono are also a good ,quiet pad .A little dusty ,but much less than stock on my Speed 3

I have Akebono "Performance" pads on my Civic and they're doing pretty well. No noise, a little dust and good bite. I didn't opt for them on the Jeep as they weren't available at the moment.
