I just purchased a new Poulan push mower with the Brigs & Stratton 5.0 motor. I really like it. Has plenty of power for what I need it for and engine runs quiet in comparison to my old mower. It came with 30 weight Poulan branded oil. The chart indicates you can use synthetic 10 W 30 for all temp ranges but only 30 wt from a certain temp up to 100 degrees. What do most of you guys use? Also, I just got the mower and have only used it once. I will probably only have to mow 2-3 more times before winter sets in, maybe 4. Does the oil get degraded just from sitting in the mower in a cold garage all winter and need changed in the spring even if I’ve only used it 3-4 times prior to winter?

They say that SAE30 should'nt be used under 40 degrees. In your case I would use the Poulan oil as long as it's still above 40 degrees and change it out next spring. You can try a multigrade but it tends to get consumed more quickly than a SAE30.

Just make sure that there is oil in it, any oil. Type is generally in the 30 weight cloud. Small engines fail from lack of oil more than the wrong type of oil.

I use T6 in my Honda mower. Doesn't use a drop. Doesn't cost much to use good oil given the size of the sump. My Poulan snow blower cane with a little jug of 5 W 30 conventional but I put 5w30 Shell synthetic in it instead. It's some kind of Chonda but starts on the first pull and has plenty of grunt.
