New Mobil 1 15W50 formulation.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is being reintroduced based on popular demand. Mobil 1 15W-50 provides higher viscosity, designed to provide extra protection for performance vehicles and vehicles that operate in severe service, such as towing, hauling and racing. Additionally, Mobil 1 15W-50 contains higher levels of anti-wear (ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate) that may be required for certain racing applications and camshaft designs. This is a new Mobil 1 15W-50 formulation and is not the same as the product that was marketed a few years ago.



I copied and pasted this off Mobil`s website. What exactly is *(ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate)* ?

This is the oil I`ve been running since it came out. Just curious what the ZDDP is,that`s all. This oil make my car`s VG30DE run absolutely silent!

ZDDP is a family of zinc salts of dithio organophosphates. They are soluble in nonpolar solvents, so they easily dissolve in mineral and synthetic oils used as lubricants...The main use of ZDDP is in anti-wear additives to lubricants (eg. greases, motor oils, hydraulic fluids). To date it is the dominant anti-wear agent, present in most machine and motor oils in amount of about 1%. However for motor oil applications the amount of ZDDP has to be minimized, as the zinc and phosphorus emissions damage catalytic converters. ZDDP also has anticorrosive and antioxidant properties. ZDDP is usually manufactured with dialkyldithiophosphates as intermediates, by a reaction of phosphorus pentasulfide with suitable alcohols. These intermediates are then neutralized by adding zinc oxide, yielding ZDDP.

Here's more info pasted from their website-- sounds like they're bringing back the high-ZDDP formula. But the cap is clear or silver, not red, so maybe it's not the same formulation as the red top was. I'll be a happy camper if it is:

Don't know of any cycle riders who have tried the new 15/50.
