New Michelin Primacy MXM4

I am very curious to see first reviews of this tire. I had Primacy MXV4 on my SAAB and simply loved them. My kind of tire!

I noticed people's responses about Michelin Energy. Energy is not my kind of tire. It has OK traction and very long tread life but that's it as far as good qualities. They feel like [censored], which is by far the most important thing for me.

I made a mistake of buying cheap tires once in my life. Never again. I don't even care how much tires cost anymore. I want the best possible tire regardless of price. The best tires will pay for themselves in the long run.

fwiw, Monday took daughters car to get tires rotated at Discount Tire. Got talking to the manager about Michelin tires and the OE tires on the 07 Accord. Said they were the "step child' tire of Michelin tires.

Said he wouldn't trade the LTX's on his Suburban, and mentioned/showed me the Primacy (old version (V)I assume) and said that was the Michelin's to look at as a replacement for the OE. I assume the new version would also fit in that category.

Even in a similar tire line, it really depends on the actual tire (size), and what the OEM application was. For example, the OEM Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus tires on my '01 STS were pretty firm tires. Good tread life, good handling, good fuel economy, firm ride. This size (235/60R16 100H) was also the OEM size for some BMW and Mercedes models as I recall, so the properties of the tire may have been largely defined by the needs of those two brands.

In contrast, the Michelin Energy MXV4 S8 tires on my Camry are VERY soft...to the touch and on the car. This size is even V-rated (P215/60R16 94V), and they're a good bit softer than the H-rated Energys on my Cadillac. Treadwear for these S8s is apparently not the greatest, but boy, ride quality sure is.

So even these two Energy tires are totally different in their demeanor. The Energy MXV4 S8 tires are softer even than the T-rated Michelin X Radials on my minivan. I actually really like them...we'll have to see how they wear and if the performance changes over time.

I just purchased a new set today (Primacy MXM4) from my local Costco for my Maxima. I thought the pricing was superb and I saved $149 over Discount Tire! Unfortunately it will be 5-7 days before they are in stock but well worth the wait.

OT "Saved $149 over DT"? Was that over the price quoted on their website? Or was that after you gave DT the Costco price and gave them a chance to match/beat the price?

Reason I ask is I've never paid the DT website price, a starting negotiation point only. For me the DT website price is like the sticker on a car. I gather the best online price, throw in a comparable Wally lifetime rotate/balance install and they've always beaten that price. Even once beat the no tax DTD price on a set of Yoko's. And I now have a DT Care One card which frequently(now) adds more rebate offers with purchase.

No Costco nearby anyway, but after my DT experiences doubtful I'd buy elsewhere, but that's just me.

Congrats on your new MXM4's. I have a relatively new set of the Primacy MXV4 on an Accord after returning a set of DWS's. So far a very competent smooth riding tire.

I agree I spoke on the phone with DT and they wouldn't budge, I've been a DT customer for over 20 years. The company headquarters is here in Arizona and I've been very loyal to this local company and had great experiences over the years. I always made sure my friends and family went to DT. You can probably tell I'm feeling guilty going to Costco but DT just wouldn't budge even after I faxed over the quote from Costco! I don't think they can compete on the Michelin line but I'm not certain for the reason. If it was $50 I would have went to DT but $149 buys a lot of Dogfish IPA!

That being the case, can't blame you in the least. Normally I go to the DT store with my price quote info, to speak to the organ grinder (manager), but your time and gas now too, is valuable. Sounds like you're satisfied, and that's all that's important. Like I said, no Costco nearby so I can't really compare.

Hope you enjoy your new Mich sneakers, and keep us updated from time to time.

I bought a set for the Beetle about a month ago in 205/55-16. They replaced Continental Contipros which themselves replaced the OE Goodyears.

The difference is dramatic. By far the quietest tire I have ever had. Composed, comfortable ride. Much better in rain. Seem to absorb road imperfections too. The sidewalls feel a little softer when cornering, but that's a small price to pay for the benefits. I would take the MXM4s over the Contis any day and would pay double for the Michelins over the Goodyears.

I've got about 6,000 miles on a set of these on my Saab. They replaced 2 pairs of mismatched Pirelli P6 and Kelly Navigator Golds that came on the car when I bought it. 215/55/16 H-rated.

In comparison, the Primacy MXM's are returning equally good or better fuel economy, have firmed up the ride a little - they may be a little higher rated in load range (I like it on this car), are equally quiet as what was there before, except for a little more "ping" on expansion joints, etc. They are confident in the rain, decent in light snow, and unimpressive in deeper snow.

Winter has finally decided to end up here, so I have yet to take them on the twisty back roads for more spirited driving - I'll report back later if I remember to...

Oh yeah, I'm not sure if this is the tires, the shop, or the mounting machine, but these tires needed NO wheel weights! Were made in Canada, for the record.

If the shop's balancer used the Hunter Smartweight technology, that would not be surprising.

Hi Critic,

According to the tirerack site, here's what equipment the used:
Mounting Equipment: Coats 5065 (Touchless/Runflat capable)
Balancing Equipment: Hunter GSP9700 (State of the art/Touchless/Runflat capable)

Shops usually have multiple balancers so the one listed on the TireRack site is not always the one that was used for your car.

However, the Hunter GSP9700 is the top-of-the-line balancer by Hunter and should have the Smartweight technology.

Regarding DT not being able to price match Costco on Michelin tires, I found this post/comment interesting as it relates to DT matching a Costco price, including it's $70 coupon. It seems it may be store/manager dependent ie., how bad they want the sale.

At first I thought, perhaps DT won't match a shopping club price, that has a fee to join. But, then I remembered being at a DT store when the DT store employee got on the phone to a Sam's Club to confirm a customer's price quote.

Again, you're satisfied and thats what's important. For those interested, DT/DTD currently has a $70 rebate on Michelin tires thru 5/28.

Costco has the $70 dollar instant off offer currently until June 8th on Michelin tires.

Some shops are running the older GSP9700s, most don't even use the 9700. Costco uses the Coats XR1800 with IR-based sensors.

I am having a set of these put on our 09 Civic in 205/55/16 right now. I will keep an update of their performance when I can. I do think Michelin makes superior tires. They are the only brand I have ever had that needed no weights at all! I was sold then. I am always skeptical on new tires though.
