They’re trying this out, so far in maybe 30 of about 600 locations.

"Listen, if I can't struggle to read the tri-fold paper menu by the light of a kerosene lamp on my wobbly table in the most uncomfy wood chair, I don't want it," one of the top comments on the video read.
Another user commented: "A swing and a miss. We eat here for a reason. I get what you tried. I don't want bright and open. I want grandma's house back."
More sarcstically, one user wrote: "Ok, I see what y'all did. Nice work. Now, undo it all and put it back like it was."

I have been OK with Cracker Barrel for many years. I think they are a step above Denny's. Unfortunately, I have also had many meals in Mom & Pop cafes that were worse. Thought their general store approach was too expensive. That said, my retirement gift is a stained oak rocking chair from there. I appreciated it and use it a lot.

For people like me whose relatives were all farmers in the 30’s and 40’s its like having dinner in a cleaned up version of your grandpa’s old barn or your uncle’s garage from when you were a kid. Maybe for the current generation of families they need to update decor to rotary phones, wind up watches and VCR’s. Maybe it is just nostalgia on my part but I do think the food was better 10 years ago.

We hit Cracker Barrel about every other weekend. The one near us in NoVA is great. But the one we went to recently that's just on the other side of the border in NC was, uh... disappointing.

In earlier days, Cracker Barrel bought their furniture from Hunt's Country Furniture in New York State.
Today it is said to be sourced from China.

Frankly, all the stuff in their "gift shop" looks like Micsydn (pronounced mick-sy'-den).
Made In China Stuff You Don't Need.
