New Jeep 2.0L Hurricane Issues

Sounds like there are some issues with the PCM not detecting the fuel's octane rating correctly and applying max timing resulting in broken spark plugs. The plug electrodes are damaging pistons and cylinder liners. Hard to believe that made it past the factory testing gambit.

You'd think they would have the software down that figures out what the relative octane is from the detected knock at the certain running conditions after what 20 maybe 30 years?

The article doesn't say that, in fact the entire article is speculation based around NHTSA complaints and opinions on Reddit.

That explains it. The quality of the engineers from there is awful.

I believe this is a recently upgraded engine, it is not the same as the I4 Turbo from 2018. Quote from the article written May 28 2026: "A brand-new turbocharged four-cylinder engine with F1 tech in a Jeep Grand Cherokee already has people talking, especially as shoppers start asking whether there are Jeep Hurricane 4 engine problems to worry about."

Sure is. Same name new clean sheet design, block, ignition, fuel injection, everything is different.

I thought the 270/295 version was spicy.. and they released a detuned version for the compass..


but the 2026 version is 324 horsepower and 332 torque
The 2026 Hurricane 4 introduces Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI)—spraying fiery jets from a secondary pre-chamber for ultra-fast, high-efficiency combustion under heavy load—alongside dual port and direct fuel injection (PFI/DI) to cut down on emissions and carbon buildup

The old version was used in GC until 2025 apparently.

not sure why they think 5000lb suv need tiny displacement super spicy mode. Doesnt sound like a recipe for longevity.

I'm usually pretty caught up on Jeep engines but this one made it past my radar.

Seems like a lower tuned 3.0 hurricane would be a much better fit.. and already designed for that application.


I owned the old version as a first year engine in my 2019 jeep cherokee(2019 was first year in cherokee) and it was fine.. although it threw a MIL and they replaced the whole fuel injection system except the injectors.. still had a code so they threw in a new ecu that supposedly fixed it (under warranty)

IT was a much better matched engine vs the pentastar with the reluctant to shift 9 speed ZF.

EPA credits on small displacement, turbo, high output engines. Engineering lead time is what, 5 years on this engine? Hard to judge the regulatory landscape 5 years out. Look at the Ram and Hemi reintro as an example. And keeping up with the competition of course.

I have the earlier engine in my 2021 Wrangler 4xe; no issues so far.
