the only reason that I hold the coallition to a higher standard is that we are supposed to be there to show the people of Iraq what is available to them should they choose our way.

Doing the same stuff, and justifying it on "not as bad as we could be doing" isn't reflective of what we should be presenting to these people.

Anyway, there won't be any prisoner abuse scandals soon.

As far as I know, it has always been illegal to take pictures/videos of prisoners.....so, what's a camera or cam-coreder doing in a prison, if there is no use for it?
 
The fact that these guards took photographs and videos of what they did just shows you a lot about these people. Could you imagine a criminal videotaping himself as he breaks into a store?

I am glad they did take videos. It will help to convict them. They deserve to be convicted. Heck, even if they were ordered to do this stuff, a soldier is not required to follow what he knows is an illegal order. If an officer told a soldier to shoot several unarmed civilians in cold blood would the soldier do it?

I believe that that's a right under the Geneva Convention.

The administration has gone to great lengths to ensure that the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to the people captured to date, so I'd guess that the camera ban has nothing to do with it either.
 
If its illegal by the rules of the Geneva convention to take pics of prisoners, why did'nt the U.N. punish the Koreans,Vietnamese, and arabs who did it? Guess it must be because they might get their precious backsides shot if they tried. The Photos were stupid, the actions of the guards were stupid, they are being punished for it. However our enemies never are. The U.N. is as useful as the League of Nations was. Remember how that world body stopped the rape of Ethiopia and told Hitler he was a bad boy?

Uh, criminals, STUPID CRIMINALS, often videotape themselves committing crimes.
 
tec97, I was thinking about that when I posted the above. Just about every store nowadays has a video camera somewhere and any criminal with any sense should know it. Of course some hide their faces somehow and others don't seem to care.

The really smart criminals get involved in something where they have little chance of getting caught and where they can make big money. For example, some of these SPAMMERs are living in mansions. Of course, they don't consider themselves criminals. Look at the money some of those crooked CEOs were making before they got caught. And what percentage are caught?

It told me that they were confident that there was no problem with what they were doing. It raises a big red flag that says the rot goes higher than the flunkies they have lined up for court matial so far.

One of the good things that has come from all the publicity is that it is going to be very difficult for the military and the administration to get away with sacrificing a few low level enlisted people to make the problem go away.

They might actually have to fix their broken command and control system
 
I'd sure believe that. The current regime here thinks nothing of locking up refugees including kids in the Outback for years. Its how they won the last election here. Do a search for kids overboard or Tampa and you'll see the lengths the Liberal coalition will go to to stay in power. But it looks like things are turning for them. They just released the largest vote buying budget of all time and still trail the opposition by a substantial margin. election later this year

I'll take that tennis ball and throw it right back at you. Would your administration like to tell Australia and the rest of the world what it plans to do with the Australian and other International "prisoners" who are beig held, without charges being laid, at Guantanamo Bay ?

Howard's policies for mandatory detention will almost certainly help to see him out on the streets at the next election. What he has done is plain WRONG. Plus the Iraq thing, Kids overbaord etc etc etc.....the public are starting to wake up to when he's lying....his lips move.

(UK, and U.S. made the list also).

Well, I've actually seen tapes that people made of themselves comitting crimes because they thought it was really funny and wanted to watch it over and over... Those are really STUPID crimials (on par with the ones who drop their wallets at crime scenes).
