Just picked up a new DuroMax 9500 dual fuel inverter generator. I read a ton of posts on here for advice on oil and breaking procedures. I went with Rotella T4 10W30. Ran it about 30 minutes and dumped out all the sparkly oil, ran it another 30 with a couple 5 minute intermittent 1,600 watt loads and also toggled the high and low idle speeds through out both runs. Dumped that oil too, still sparkly but not as much. I’ll run it for the next 5 or 6 hours on this oil and start adding more loads but not to exceed 50%. After that I’ll switch to a full synthetic 10w30 or 5w30 and figure which oil I’ll use. I figure at that point maybe good ole supertech full syn will be good. I’ll change it every 50 hours or 6 months after that.

So, Thank You All for the contributions to this site, it is a wealth of knowledge. Much Appreciated!!

It takes a few oil changes to get all that break-in glitter out. Be quick with pulling the drain plug after the engine stops to drain out the oil before the glitter has a chance to settle in the bottom of the engine.

I put a Fumoto oil drain valve on my generator and oil changes are quick and easy. (Also, the oil drain was right above the frame and it was unacceptably messy. So I put a short length of tubing on the Fumoto valve to direct the drain cleanly away from the frame and into an oil pan.)

Given how little oil these machines hold I have come up with a new plan. Basically I run the recommended OCI then change the oil via topside extraction. Next I run the machine under normal load for 20-60 minutes. Last step is to chane it again. This procedure has cost me about 1.5 quarts of oil between the leaf vacuum (Honda GSV-190) and inverter generator (Predator 3500 212cc) and it makes me feel good knowing that the short flush runs go more dirt out. Cleaning is all about dilution.
