Just curious. I'm planning on buying a new desktop and finally getting away from Windows based PC's. Trouble is that Apple has not announced when a new iMac desktop 27" is due to be released. It's been a long time since any upgrade for them unless you count the OS. Some say October....while others say maybe next year. The rumor websites don't even know.

There was speculation it would be announced at the same time as the iPhone. I guess Apple didn't feel there was anything significant to change, but sometimes they quietly update the desktops.

I don't think we'll see anything revolutionary in the next iMac. Probably just a spec bump, which won't mean much for the average person since they rarely use all of its performance.

I'd just wait for the Black Friday or post-Christmas sales and grab something then. You just missed the back-to-school deals.

I'd definitely wait, it's been 514 days since the last update. For reference, the average upgrade is every 273 days according MacRumors.

I'd wait too. They may do a Retina or close to Retina in the new iMac. Most likely a speed bump and spec bump is what we'll see there.

Yeah if no retina display, Id get a mac mini or an MBA and connect it to retina...

Or since people say apple is overpriced, you can consider the $1199 Samsung S27B970D display which is about the same thing, just $200 more.

The new iMac is due out "any time now".

I am not expecting a "Retina" display. But who knows!

The 27 inch iMac's screen is already VERY nice with it 1440 resolution, sitting at a normal distance, you can't see individual pixels.

I would be all for higher resolution though!

I'm not sure Retina is coming all that soon....especially for the iMac 27". We'll see I guess. I just want to be sure that when I do make this purchase, that I am getting the latest upgrade from Apple. I'd hate to spend top dollar on a machine about to be upgraded.

Apple appears to have updated the iMac:

Intel Quad-Core i5 and i7 processors, LED-backlit displays, more storage options, faster graphics, integrated HD video camera.

The overall form factor remains, but there are some nice improvements under the hood.

That's the same model that's been out for a while. I got the 27inch around last year.

Still a great product!

But if I was planning on buying one know, I'd wait since the next gen is due to come out soon enough.

If the next gen does have a significant bump in screen res, I would upgrade to an i7 ivy bridge.

I am very satisfied with my Mac now. But you know me. I'm sick in the head!

Oh, I agree. The current iMac is great, I'm certain. I'd love to have a new one in 27 inch. But, as noted, why buy new right now when all intel seems to infer a new model is on the horizon? You would think that Apple would start putting the current model on sale or something BEFORE the new one comes out. Then I might think about buying it. But since they are kind of a non-sale type company....I'll wait a while and see.

I am VERY happy after switching from PC to MAC in January this year. It took me about 6 months to get comfortable with it, because I have only ever known Windows/MS Dos. We have the 21.5" iMac.

At work I still get the regular Dell stuff.

My bad, I didn't realize they already had i5 as the base processor. I thought they still used i3. But Wikipedia set me straight.

Our family also switched to an iMac early this year also, around February I guess. It's a 7,1 model, 24" with 2.8 GHz Core 2 Extreme CPU that my brother had and wasn't using. We love the simplicity and the stability.

The MAC hard drives are HORRIBLE in my experience... Mine is a late 2010 Pro getting #4 replaced as I type....PURE JUNK!
RUN away. my next computer is going to be HP again.. I love em'

My understanding is that all large PC/Mac vendors use all large hard drive manufacturers as OEM, and therefore all have similar reliability ratings "from the same era".

The only difference I know back in around 2006 was that HP/Compaq has additional requirement on drive seek induced vibration due to the chassis rigidity, and therefore requested a smoother seek profile. Other than that they are all fairly similar in requirement.
