This is why I wanted to change out the OEM Honda oil on my new Pilot. Got back the UOA from Speediagnostix on the new Honda Pilot. Oil had 494 miles on it. Now I know instead of wondering.

I changed to Amsoil Signature Series 0w-20 (sent virgin sample for VOA) and just got back from an almost 4,000 mile trip. I'll change the oil again and send another sample off for UOA to see how things are going.

Interestingly enough Honda is adamant in keeping the factory fill in until the maintenance minder calls for an oil change due to additives (moly) in the oil. They claim the additives help properly break in the engine. I believe most of the Japanese car manufacturers are this way. We changed the factory fill on our 2024 Odyssey when the maintenance minder hit 15% as our dealer recommended. I guess I will see if our engine blows up early.

Lake Speed Jr even recommends using the OEM oil for the first few OCIs, except first changing it between 500-1000 miles and again in 3k-4k miles, then going on a 5k OCI. I was going on a long trip and had the Amsoil on the shelf, so switched to it. He suggests now sticking with it for a few OCIs to get a baseline, then if the UOAs are still showing slightly elevated levels, at that time consider going up a viscosity grade before changing brands. We'll see how this plays out. I'm not a very patient person, but I do have enough Amsoil SS 0w-20 and filters for three more oil changes.

OEM’s come up with all kinds of cost of ownership reductions. My favorite “lifetime” cvt fluids…I always do an early oci on new vehicles. Sometimes I get a lot of debris out, sometimes I don’t. I don’t care what other people do.

My new Honda brochure said to do an early oil change....... of course I'll do my own thing... just saying...only had it 3 days. I'm not doing any Hoodoo Voodoo

Interesting! Can you take a photo of the first oil change recommendation from the manual? This would be a change for Honda. Thanks

Got back the UOA results after the 4k miles' trip. From right to left, VOA Amsoil SS 0w-20, UOA Honda OEM 0w-20, and UOA Amsoil 0w-20. Miles: is miles on the oil, not vehicle. Can see wear metals trending downward as expected. Based on the latest samples' properties, it looks like there may be some blending of the Amsoil and OEM oil that was left in the engine after draining and filter replacement. I'll send another sample of the used Amsoil currently in the engine after another 4k miles. Yes, Fuel Dilution: should be zero on the Amsoil VOA. Email sent to Lake to correct this and verify oxidation.
