Saw some new Fram High Mileage filters with some kind of time released gel at Wal-Mart today. At least it's not Teflon.....

PTFE is what they used to have in them
don't use them. this gel you speak of could (at worst) become dislodged and clog something up. at best you are getting a shoddy filter design with a chemical impregnated into it that either A. does not belong in your engine oil, B. gets filtered out by the filter anyway, or C. is useless and more benefit would be obtained by using a high-mileage engine oil

You're thinking of the DoubleGuard. The high mileage version has some undisclosed proprietary glop.
I fully agree with A. and C. in hal's reply above...
The DoubleGuard and the Higher Mileage filters have the best of both worlds: they are useless AND expensive.
