Amazon accidentally marked the Athlon 64 3800+ chip at $320 last week. I got an order in before they switched the price back, so I'm hoping everything goes through.

I've never payed more than $300 for a CPU/mobo/memory combined, so I think this might end up on ebay. An Athlon 64 compatible board is $190 plus I'd need to buy new memory, so it's get pricey quickly, despite my deal.

I was very close to buying the entry level 64 chip, but opted out since the software is fairly far behind that processor. I am very happy with the XP platform from AMD. The 64 will be there in 2 years when I build my next rig.

I've done some fair sized CADD work on my Athlon 1800+ and it was fast enough.

If I were to upgrade or buy a new computer though, it would be a lot faster. You can get an AMD 2800+ cpu for $82, there isn't much reason to go any slower.

As more people realize just how powerful a machine you can buy for not much money, I think the computer mfrs are going to be having problems.

For almost anything on the web, over 1GHz is plenty of processor speed. faster processors will help once you get it downloaded and start working with it on your machine, but just browsing and mail and downloading won't be any faster.
