Tonight I bought a 2001 sc1 from a friend of mine. It’s a 5 speed manual sohc 1.9l. Needs a few things such a motor mounts valve cover gasket, right front brake hose is chafed a new headliner and the exhaust heat shield hung back up. I also plan on buying 2 matching tires and refreshing the headlights going to be resealing them as well since they let moisture in. All new fluids and Over all solid running little car. I do have one issue I have to figure out on high the blower motor doesn’t work. I have to figure out why I’m sure it’s nothing to big. Over all it’s all little annoying things it needs. The bones are solid as well as the power train.

As I see it, those cars are great transportation to the blue-collar job sites. Even more so if the engine doesn't use oil or if it's been overhauled with the correct replacement pistons.

You can oversized the oil filter to a Wix 51516 / Fram 3600 / Purolator 20195.

OEM filters are on Rock Auto too, and they have a rebate…

Run some Shell Rotella T5 in 10w30 or T6 in 5W-40 to clean the rings and slow the oil burning..

I love Mobil 1 ESP in 0w30 in my Saturn SL2 manual…

Transmission fluid needs to be Dexron III, not VI…

You can run a TES-295 fluid instead, but that is expensive…

I'd watch for oil consumption, as others have alluded to, these are notorious for it, it's a design issue.

I'd also remove that gaudy wing, it's a bit silly on a 100HP car, lol.

A buddy of mine had one of these (sans wing) in red for years and that car took an insane amount of abuse, it was quite impressive.

The wing was a stock feature on the expression trim Saturns it was a special edition thing. But I do agree it’s silly.
I’ve owned 10 of these now so I’m pretty familiar with the oil burning for sure. The sohc isn’t near as bad as the dohc. The dohc really can drink up some oil.
I’ve seen some of these be absolutely tortured and survive they’re surprisingly durable. I love these cars simple cheap and reliable!

Yes, the abuse they can take is absolutely amazing!

And you are right, the DOHC ones tended to be worse on the oil burning, though the SOHC ones were definitely not immune. His ended up getting sold to a friend of mine who used it for delivering pizza. The oil consumption was getting pretty bad around then (coming up on 150,000 miles IIRC, might have been higher) but as long as you kept oil in it, it was surprisingly good on gas and just asked for nothing. Ever.

I have never seen that wing on one before (thank God! LOL), I wonder if we didn't get the "Expression" trim in Canada?

I miss those cars. I had a 92 SL2 5 speed loaded with leather etc I bought new. Great car. The a few years ago I got an 2000 SC2 automatic and used that a few years and sold it to a friend for her daughters 1st car.

I don’t know I may google it and find out though. It was a limited thing so maybe not. I’ve only seen 3 in my life time in the states.

How many miles and what’s the going price for a Saturn needing some TLC here days? They used to be all over the road but I never see them anymore.

No the wing actually adds 50 rwhp and each racing sticker adds 5 except for a NOS sticker, which adds 10.

Body has 246,000 engine and trans have 128,000 I gave him 2,000 but it has some nice touches like a torrent cluster and access to free parts. 2,000 in this goofy market is probably fair or close to it.
