Your Crosstrek and a 2006 with 2.5 have nothing in common. Even post 2009 there are almost no issues as they got the updated headgaskets. This thread is about a new Subi which has nothing in common with the previous gen Subie 2.5.


Well, that's good to know. Supposedly the new 2.0s have a tendency to like oil. They overfill on purpose (I was told) due to the fact burning a couple quarts isn't uncommon. But as long as it's not a bad head gasket I'm totally OK with other engine problems like consuming oil....

My point being, Subaru made a new designed gasket to fix the issue. If they don't share in the cost of repairs they're a company I won't give money to. They know it was bad design and should at least cover part of the cost for customers. That's what I'm waiting to see.

people used to say "i havent heard of headgasket issues before 2005" too. I love subaru's, but have little faith in OEM head gaskets.

I was possibly leaning toward a WRX until a relative told me of their Subaru 2.5 head gasket issue. It seems to be common and Subaru seems to enjoy taking a couple thousand bucks from a customer to fix cruddy design and engineering. Makes me wish we hand never bought our Crosstrek. I'll wait to see if SoA covers any of the fix for them. They're making and waiting for calls...


The headgasket issue has never effected ANY turbo version of the 2.5 or 2.0 Subaru engine. The head design itself is completely different.

Someone complaining about lack of quality in a modern Honda? Maybe a Dodge or something, but not your brand Dude!

Based on your list of requirements, there are a ton of cars that meet your criteria. I'm going to add front wheel drive or all wheel drive since you're in an icy part of the country.

Mazda 6 is awesome, easily exceeds your criteria.
Also, I just bought a Ford Focus. Mine is an Electric version, but with all the gasoline engine powertrains available on that chassis, you have a big choice of performance options to choose from. A Focus is quiet, great MPG, handles like its on rails, fast depending on which ecoboost engine you get, & easy to purchase and find since there are plenty of Ford dealers.

Ford Focus is a world car. Ford can't af-Ford (ha!) to get a bad reputation on that one, and they know it. Its very durable. Actually durability isn't a problem for most cars now. You could even get a turbo Hyundai these days and not worry about durability.
