Contacted several dealers within a 70 mile radius last night. Visited a few today. Drove the 4 cyl Ecoboost and the 6 back to back at one. The 4 definitely has more power to accelerate if you are already moving. Both are comparable from a stop for acceleration. The 6 idled smoother. We liked both. It would have taken 4-5 years to break even on the extra cost for the Ecoboost 4 cyl.
The deal breaker was changing the oil. The Ecoboost has a shield under the engine and transmission that has to be removed to change the oil. It is held on by maybe a dozen allen-head bolts.
So considering the "old reliable" technology of the 6 cyl and the ability to do reasonable at-home oil changes, I opted for the 6 cyl.
Going to pick it up tomorrow at a dealer 60 miles away but was the best to work with from the beginning of first contacting them. They had to get it from another dealer 120 miles away and it won't be there until tomorrow evening. Black metallic paint with black cloth interior. A plane SEL model (mid model) with no extra options, 2014.
Would have liked to wait a couple months to get rid of the leased Elantra, but inventory of the Edges is getting scarce already and the incentives are pretty good. So the timing was good.
