New car with additives, what should I expect?

I bought an '02 Old's Intrigue with a 3.5l and 193,000 miles on it. The previous owner said that they used slick 50 high mileage engine treatment every 50,000, and 1 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer at every OCI. They also said that they only used Valvoline conventional oil. The engine has a very minimal leak (valve cover gaskets) and it tends to burn a little oil, about 1qt disappears through leaking and burning over 2500 miles. As of right now I changed the oil to Mobil 1 High Mileage.

My question is what kind of problems should I expect from an engine that has had additives dumped into it so frequently?

Also I'm new to the forum, hi everyone.

Welcome.

Probably not much. If it's gone that far without any serious problems, it will probably be fine for a while. Switching to Mobil 1 High Mileage was probably a good idea.

Slick 50 is a snake oil and does next to nothing, and the Lucas oil stabilizer isn't going to hurt much either. "Valvoline conventional" as its called around here is just fine and the most important thing is that it was indeed changed regularly.

When I first bought the car I had to do a lot of work to it to make it an everyday driver. Coolant flush, fuel filter (original was on it), brake pads all around and 2 new calipers in the back, new passenger fender, tensioner pulley, power steering pump and flush, serpentine belt, and an air filter. Also I spent an hour and a half scrubbing the throttle body with a tooth brush.

It seemed as if the previous owner only changed the oil. When I first opened the the oil cap there was a bunch of crud on the piece of sheet metal covering the timing chain, and that makes me think that other parts of the engine might be that dirty.

I do not want to use any solvents other than what's in the oil, I plan on just using oil to clean my engine. I plan on going 4500 miles before my next oil change. I am going to drop the filter and top off the oil every 1500. I plan on doing this for the next 3 oil changes.

If the condition of the gaskets leaking and the burning doesn't improve (I highly doubt it will) I am going to replace them.

Another problem I came across on this vehicle is the transmission. It kicks whenever it up shifts. I have already replaced the pan gasket and filter but it still has that problem. The fluid level is correct but when I wipe the dipstick on a clean white rag there is always metal particles mixed in with the new ATF. I am still debating on whether or not to get it flushed at a quick lube. I even thought of buying a bottle of ARX to throw into the transmission 1000 mile before i get it flushed. To me that is more like a band aid for a big wound. I might just have to take it to a repair shop to get it looked at ( I have little experience with automatic transmissions and torque converters).

If its that dirty inside I'd suggest more frequent OCI's than your planned 4500 miles... If its that dirty I'd dump it with a new filter every 2500 miles..

I've had valve covers off engines where those "baffles " under the oil fill hole looked like you describe but the valvetrain only looked slightly varnished. Those baffles don't see oil until you dumb some in so the film that's on it just sits and bakes on there. I say stick with your original plan and run what ever oil you want. Its made it this far.

I wouldn't spend the money for a synthetic oil in this engine. A conventional oil for high mileage engines might be worth the extra cost; I'm not sure. The HM stuff has some minor good attributes and a lot of marketing hype.

If it's an '02 then by that time anything marketed as "Slick 50" probably stopped containing any PFTE after Quaker State-Slick 50 got dinged by the FTC back in 1996. At that point you're probably dealing more with dubious claims rather than anything that would likely destroy an engine. I wouldn't worry about the Lucas stuff. Not that I think it did any good, but they're probably not that bad either.

Not sure how much VI Improver is loaded into the Slick 50 product, but there is a ton of the stuff in the Lucas. I would wager it is the cheap stuff, though, with very little branching and very high tendency to form hard deposits.

Too much of the wrong kind of VI Improver is bad news.
