Bought a "new" 2008 Mercedes CLS63 AMG the end of July. It had around 50 miles on it but the oil Mobil 1 5w45 euro spec was in the car for almost 18 months before I had the dealer change the oil/filter, it was changed at the end of the first 1000 miles. I am now at 4000 miles and feel like it might be a good idea to change the oil again. I plan on changing it every 5000 miles even though Mercedes says you can go 1 year and or 10000 miles on normal oil/filter changes. This is a hand built engine that is run hard whenever I drive the car. What do you guys recommend?

I see no reason not to. MB is fairly smart in their recommendations, etc., but it doesnt hurt to be more conservative, especially given the cost of those engines!

You sound as if you want to change it more-so than you believe you have to. If you're looking for validation to MB's one year claim then do an oil analyis. If you want peace of mind, and it makes you feel good to change your baby's life blood then change it every 5000 miles and enjoy your car!

I have never heard of a 5W45, that is interesting. Is it a special oil only for MB? I think changing it every 5000 would be good and it will give you peace of mind.

Just food for thought, not trying to persuade you of anything.
Your car was designed (under German Law) for one oil change
per year....it has a large oil capacity and can easily
go the interval. If I had what you've got, I'd personally
think about using something different than the Mobile 1
like Motul or Redline. If I owned one of those I'd only
put the best stuff available in it. I know this will draw
critical remarks about proof of what is best and yadayadayada
but my experience has been the "top ester" oils are
noticably quieter, get better mileage, noticably better
performance and NOTHING will prevent varnish, sludge
and keep an engine cleaner than ester...period.
BTW, did I say NICE CAR?

With the size of that cars oil sump and it's design Mobil-1 0W40 is purpose made to order for that car! It is available at Walmart,AutoZOne and most other places that cary Mobil-1 oils. It is not expensive at all by synthetic standards. It used to be factory fill for all AMG's I thought it was still. I would use M-1 0W40 andnot even bother to try anything else.

Thanks guys sorry I fat fingered my first post ment 5W40 Mobil 1, MB use to recommend 0W40 Mobil 1 for their AMG's but that changed to 5W40 with the new engine. I don't know why?

Frome the Mobil website

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is an advanced performance synthetic engine oil designed to help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of Car Emission Reduction Systems in diesel powered automobiles that require oil that is approved against Mercedes-Benz MB 229.51 or MB 229.31specifications. Interesting, my brother in law's 1999 Porsche Boxster also had Mobil 1 5W40 as the factory fill. He's now using Mobil 1 0W40. Maybe the Mercedes dealer has the Mobil 1 5W40 meant for your Mercedes.

Hi,
Pitbull - The lubricant should be M1 ESP 5w30 I believe unless the ESP 5W-40 'M" version is available from your MB Dealer. I was of the opinion that the M versions were only FF and were especially formulated for creating a good engine break-in environmant

The lubricant I noted is especially Approved against MB229.31 and MB229.51 - it has only 0.6% SA

There is no need to change your engine oil prematurely - go by the very accurate (and very conservative) "oil change due" device. The Benz one is well tried over the last decade or so and can be trusted to be accurate

For the Poster with the MY98 (1999) Porsche Boxster I would use M1 TDT 5W-40 or Delvac 1 5W-40 - these lubricants have a HTHS vis around 4cP - a good safety factor for an early series Boxster engine
