I just installed a topdog v system on my 2004 Prius.

First thing to notice after 600 miles is that there in no black residue on the napkin that I use to clean the dipstick when checking the oil.

IMO....600 miles is not much of a test. Most oils don't show any black residue for several thousand miles.

I've used PP 5w20 for the last two oil changes, and the oil stays clear until about 3500 miles.

Seems a bit overkill to me. Most people are putting bypass filters in large engines and many in diesels where its not unusual to have a 3 gallon oil change. But a Prius??

Sure, 600 miles is not much of a test, but there always was some black residue on the napkin used to clean the dipstick. Now there is none.

Oh well, a Prius still has an engine that needs clean oil!

Oil is Motul 8100 xcess 5w40, but it will be changed to mobil 1 0w30 and perhaps 0w20 even later on. We are still into 40 weights here in Europe

Ok, I will take some photos but later on

Some advice on the Top Dog V for all of you. Don't think you can outsmart Pareto on the filter selection. If parallel flow bypass systems have a flaw, it's that they are very, very sensitive to filter restriction. Pareto spent a lot of time testing to find the filter that had just the right combination of restriction and efficiency. If you substitute some other filter beside the Amsoil they use, you may end up with a no-flow, or low flow situation. Other filters and filter types have been tested and result in either insufficient flow or no flow at all.

The thing that makes parallel flow work is Delta P at the primary filter and if that pressure can't overcome the restriction of the bypass filter, no flow!

That's a good thing, but I assure you.... it's been done... but I can't tell you how or by whom. ( : < ).

I am using a Top Dog base with a bypass filter from another manufacturer, but using it in bypass configuration. I was going to try it in parallel flow configuration but found out it had already been tried and didn't work... too much restriction. I needed the base because my 5.4L has only one (very inaccessible) oil circuit port on the block and I had three things to hook up to it. The Pareto base gave me four ports and had the magnets for even better filtration. Super well made stuff! I have the bypass and my aftermarket oil pressure gauge hooked up to two ports, a sample port hooked up to another, leaving one for a DP port for a second gauge.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Along the same lines, my full flow is Royal Purple's synthetic. Supposedly these things have less restriction compared to a normal FF filter. I know there is flow through by BP (it gets hot) but I think I might use a cellulose FF next time. Thoughts?

In theory, more DP would increase bypass flow but I would rather have a better primary filter in place for a long OCI. Between the high efficiency primary and the bypass (even if flow is a little less than it might be), you'll have a good setup that go a long interval with no trouble at all.

You don't really like the idea of pure oil later, do you ?

Thanks. I think you are right. If there is a particle that the BP didn't have time to filter, it will be caught by the synthetic FF.
