Just bought a new Troy Bilt TB200 mower from Lowes. I pulled it out of the box and saw a small bit of oil at the bottom of the box but didn't think much of it, after I got it assembled I noticed the engine appears to be leaking oil, manual says it doesn't come with oil in it and a small bottle was included and I haven't added any in it. I'm wondering if I should just take it back?

My Briggs leaked from the valve cover gasket too.
It's only a year old.
Check the screws if you want to keep it but I would take it back.
It should not leak with only some assembly oil in it.

Box didn't look opened previously, factory taped. I got it for $50 off, so $217 that's why I grabbed it used a promo code but I think u might be right about these engines Joe.

They sure did a lousy job painting the engine. There's spots missing on the cylinder in between the cooling fins and there's spots missing on the valve cover. And then to top it all off, they go and overspray the ignition wire and boot.

I will withhold my negative comments on B&S.

I will be in the minority and say to give it a try. The engine is shipped "dry" but there is always some residual oil left in the engine after testing. My Honda powered mower arrived with an air cleaner filter, housing, and box soaked in a some residual oil, enough oil to effectively block the paper air filter to cause a no start.

No telling what position your mower was shipped in. Give it a chance. If it leaks, swap it out. Just an opinion.....I could be wrong.

It has a warranty. Use it without fear, and simply return it if it has any issues. Our local Lowes is very generous on returns and always treats us well...

I took the oil cover off, bottom screw wasn't as tight as the others and the gasket was soaked in oil at the bottom so that was probably the cause. I tightened everything back up then put the bottle of oil in it and let it sit over night and it hasn't leaked yet but the oil isn't hot either.

It may ship with a certain amount of oil in it either from being tested out or just to make sure it doesn't corrode. On the chance it was tested, then taken apart to correct something at the factory, I'd run from it. It also might be reconditioned after being returned to a store previously. Causes for return could have been as bad as not putting any oil in it before it was originally started. I'd take it back without doing anything else to it. If it's from a big box store, I'd lobby for a discount for your trouble.

Have you confirmed it's really leaking oil or is this some type of assembly lube from the factory that spooged all over the place during shipping..

I'd wipe it down, use it and see. If it leaks then, haul it back to BLowes.

Been there seen that. Tighten up the bolts, clean the oil and done. All mower ship will oil... enough to prevent rust and corrosion from shipping. It ends up being about 2oz or so. I had a pressure washer shipped to the store on it's side and other than a ruined air filter and a smoke filled first start I warned the customer of, it has been fine for 2 years now..

No, don't think so. Would be a waste of time. Use that time and money to improve the production line instead.

I can't imagine one isn't pulled from the line every few hundred or (more likely) thousand and driven around the block to ensure quality control.

When I worked at Blowes the Troy Bilt snow blowers all had evidence of gas fumes in the gas tank. All had signs of oil in the engine. Some models came filled and others you had to add the oil. But even those had evidence of some oil in the engine. Of course these all had the Chinese engines so maybe they didn't fully trust them and tested all of them
