I just bought a 2019 Kia Soul with the 1.6 non turbo the dealer has a oil change sicker on the windshield for the first oil change in 5000 miles which I thick is a little to long my driving would consist of 2-3 times a week of 20 miles and the rest of time would be 60 or more also when can I put in synthetic thanks for the help Glen

Hi Glen, you can start using synthetic at any time. You can go by the manual's severe service schedule if you'd like, but 5k doesn't seem too long.

I just follow the owner's manual recommendations for my Elantra to comply with the warranty requirements. If dealership gives different recommendations I would just follow the owner's manual. Since you are up North I would be run synthetic in Winter if not all year around.

Enjoy your new ride!

5K on synthetic would be fine. Use the oem filter, dont stretch it to long as the 1.6L has a small sump capacity. The gdi engines really can fuel dilute the oil , especially in winter.

Yes, 5k is long for first oil change. I like to drain the factory fill 1,000-1500 miles.

Don't worry 5k OCI is nothing especially on a synthetic. Since your Soul does have Direct Injection I wouldn't push that interval.

If you decide to follow the 3k severe driving interval and do your own oil change don't waste your money on synthetic stick with a quality conventional unless you get Wal-Mart Supertech full synthetic priced competitively with conventional oil. Otherwise conventional or synthetic blend is fine and stick with OE filter.

Keep in mind that OCI are not the same for all engines as it is affected by the way/climate/where you drive, size of engine and oil capacity of the pan.

A small engine (all things being equal) will require more frequent OCI due to the RPMs it operates at, obviously your 1.6 will rev higher than a 3.5 to maintain

the same performance. Also keep in mind that owner's manual is no longer written solely by engineers, but it's a 50-50 collaboration with the marketing

dept. Whether you want to keep you Seoul for a long time or not ought to guide you in your decision. I would use the best synth oil you can get and change

oil & filter every 3500 mile.

My 2013 Accent commuter has the same Gamma II engine. I split the difference between severe service OCI and OCD and dumped the factory fill at 2K miles and have used synthetic since that time with 5K mile OCIs.

I like PP 5w-30 in this engine but have also used 5w-20 over the course of time. So far so good. I'm of the mind that not going over 5K mile OCIs with this engine might serve as potential preventative maintenance versus "extending" the OCIs to the 7500 mile normal schedule. If your driving only consists of short trip, urban cycle driving, then I would pay closer attention.

We just got done visiting her aunt down in Indy who has a 2017 and really likes it.

Not a fan of the looks at all, but it’s practical for her situation. Decent little cars really.

Idk... He lives in Minnesota so really why even consider conventional oil at all. Prices are so cheap on synthetic and with new oils being 0 wts it is only time before synthetic will be the new standard for all vehicles.

SuperTech synthetic is still better than 95% of conventional oils out there, and very often even cheaper too, while meeting the Dexos1 Gen2 specifications for more demanding engines.

Agree. Too much oil for that change interval. You could go 7k with highway driving.

Seems like both of you are too focused on the numbers of 5k vs 7k, BUT you both fail to see past that blanket statement. Look deeper. This is a small 1.6L Direct Injected engine pulling a nearly 3000lbs metal shell around town. Believe it or not, but the oil in this vehicle will be working a lot harder, as compared to a 2.0L or 3.0L+ size engine in a similarly weighted vehicle. Therefore the OCI needs to be adjusted accordingly.

5k OCI with synthetic would be ideal, just make sure to use OEM oil filter. Kia/Hyundai engines are very picky about their oil filters.
