Just run 10w30 in everything, period. End of story. One grade to stock, fits all vehicles, lawnmower, generator, etc. Not too thin for those thicker oil needs, not too thick for those (perceived) thinner oil needs. If you die, wife cannot put wrong oil in the car. Perfect solution.

I've found though, especially in cold weather, that with vehicles that have variable valve timing, 10w-30 sometimes won't make the VVT actuator work right and the engine is very sluggish until warmed up.

Oh you guys with the new fangled cars. Always something to put a kink in my plans. Well works for me with my old heaps. Hey, try a synthetic in that VVT buggy.

problem is, all the OCD members here LIKE to worry about oil. you would think some of them buy cars based on which oil it takes, just so they can have the widest variety in their stash.
I only use 2 different vis because they are spec'd that way. my VUE takes 5W30, I see no reason to argue w/ the factory, but the MPV calls for 10W30, and all reports indicate that the Mazda 3.0 (not the ford 3.0) doesn't like 5W30.
so, I never worry about oil. 2 oils, 2 cars, DONE.

True, it is absurd for me to suggest anyone here not worry about oil. I think I have a one grade solution for you. Get a robust 5w30 and use it in both. I think Maxlife Synthetic 5w30 would to it. At least the stuff I have is ACEA A3 and I would have no qualms running that in a vehicle speced for 10w40 since the ACEA A3 requires a 10w40 HT/HS viscosity (>=3.5). There are others, perhaps M1 High Mileage, or for sure Redline.

My engines are multi-oil engines. Anything from heavy karo syrup to vinegar works well. Now if I can just manage to make them mulit-fuel at the same time....

Any part number works for me

(now top this = ah-HA!!)

Or just use what the engine is spec'd for. Its not like we have to hike the Alps to get 5w20 or 5w30. Why use one oil for all, when you can get better results with a different weights?

if you have 3 cars with 5 quart sumps, I do not see how it is easier to buy 15 quarts of one weight oil insted of 5 quarts of each weight.
The store has all the oils, so its a one stop shop.

Id say use whats spec'd for the engine.

PP 5w30 winter and PP 10w30 summer.. everyone wins :)

That's my new plan with the current stash of walmart discounted PP

5w-30 for both of my cars. Buy what is on sale and I'm done.
Life is simple. No worries about base oil, additives and having to defend what I overspent on oil like others here.

Worry about something that MATTERS!

Take care, bill

Right now, I'd be happy if she'd just check the oil level, tire pressure and gas guage once in awhile!!

Actually, I'm half way there TallPaul. I'm converting all vehicles over to the same brand at least. Haven't got the guts to put something other than 5W20 in a 5W20 spec'ed engine yet. That's just me.

yup, no worries here; order 2 cases of amsoil, 1 each of 5W30 and 10W30, on my doorstep the next day, I'm set for 2 years!

Hi,
TallPall - You are probably correct for about 95% of all petrol engines sold since about 1953

About then 10W-30 was introduced to become a World favorite

Only the introduction of the BMC Mini in 1959 mucked it up. They (Duckhams) had to develop 20W-50 to make up for the shortcomings of the integrated engine/gearbox and etc

10W-30 is indeed a great viscosity spread - especially as a synthetic - when used in the correct ambient range

Pablo, for OHV engines I agree with 100%, per my experience with my 1989 Ford 300 CID engine. But for OHC engines the I think the "cold cranking viscosity" of a synblend of 5W-20 or 5W-30 viscosity is better than a synthetic 10W-30 viscosity. Which would be better for cold starts with OHC engines??? Maybe I'm offbase? Always appreciate your insight!

I like the idea TallPaul, especially with ACD as the oil.

Lots of zinc, either no or very little VII, great for the Texas weather here.

Depends how you define cold I suppose. And it depends on the synthetic 10W-30. I should hope any 5W-X would flow better, but we know that just isn't the case. You need to evaluate specifications, oil by oil. Remember, two winters ago I ran SAE 30 in the Volvo. No issues.

Am I going to put 10W-30 in the XW-20 Honda van? Not likely. Would synthetic 10W-30 work? Probably. Even in winter.

That's my answer too!

Being in Dallas Texas, where we may see below freezing temps for one week a year, I run 10w30 in everything too.

M1 10w30 in my Wife's Xterra, and Maxlife 10w30 in my Taurus. I have never had any problems.

If it was colder I would think about a 5w30, maybe a 0w30 for the Xterra, but for the Taurus I keep it simple.
