Nema 6-20P for EV Charging?

Do you have an electric dryer nearby? Or somewhat nearby? If so, I’d use a 10-30 or 14-30 extension.

That's typically going to be needed for a dryer though. My understanding about how these work is that these applications in a home typically don't have a lot of insertions/removals, and most home receptacles aren't meant for that kind of use. I've rarely removed the plug from any electric dryer (even in a garage), and the typical location is very inconvenient since the lines are very short by design.

That being said, there are some splitters that might work. And maybe replacing a lower grade receptacle with something like Bryant of Hubbell. And Lectron has a splitter that can prioritize current to an EV charging system.

Charging issues are the #1 reason EV owners go back to ICE. I ask prospective owners, "How ya gonna charge?"
Manu don't even know if there is room in their service panel...

My dryer is in the basement or I would have considered this as an option. I added a 14-30 plug in my garage. I would have went higher but it was within the power capability of our detached garage power supply without running heavier wire from the house to the garage. It's been plenty for our needs with two cars. I work on call and my wife doesn't drive much so she always charges when I'm not home which is 2-3 days at time a time. I plug in every time I come home and it's never not been fully charged on 24a when I get called for work again. Now if I needed more power supply I'd upgrade to a Tesla Home Charger.

It was a lot easier to live with than I expected. I've yet to run into a problem and we've been EV only for 4 months now. Prior to that we had our first EV for 2 years before trading our last ICE vehicle. I do want to say I have nothing against ICE and I love cars in general. I'm a huge car guy in fact. I just really like the experience of driving a really fast EV and the fuel savings.
 
Thanks for this discussion, this maybe be something that could help my parents. They are afraid to put a 50A circuit in their garage subpanel because the breaker for the whole subpanel is 80A, but 20A at 240v is a good option that I had not thought about. I mean 3840 watts (16Ax240V) is a lot better than 1000 for sure.

I told them they should get one of those auto-adjusting Emporia units that comes with the sensors, but so far they have not listened to me. Ok, pardon my ignorance, but these 6-20R recepicles that I looked at don't seem to have provision for a neutral. Or at least the ones I looked at on the jungle river site don't. They have two brass colored terminals, a ground terminal and zero silver terminals..
 
I guess you do run the neutral as hot on a 12/2 per a diagram I found and tape the white lead black as to denote hot.

I would have assumed to run 12/3 and have red and black be the hots and still have a provision for a neutral terminal but I guess that's not the way it's done.
