How bad is the old mower?

A spindle (or three) for $100 is not bad, but if the mower has been attacked by the Iron Moths, and is a rusted away, it’s not worth it .....

Start with the frame, tap with a hammer. Crunching sound, rust, a “ping”, metal.
Engine, look for slobber at the muffler. Oil, gas, lots of soot.

If the frame and engine are good, consider a new mowing deck, and possibly a hood.
I have no idea on a deck, but $250 would be a very wild guess.
A few hours turning wenches, you get another ten years of life...

Items to replace, air filter, oil, oil filter, belts, spark plugs...
New mulching blades, take a peek at the antifreeze...

I suggest staying far away from the John Deere’s with the “Easy Change” oil and filter...

Look at an E140, with 48” deck...
