Need some network help

Computer A runs W7 Professional.
Has HP1020 printer USB hookup.

Router is Belkin N, with wireless access point. Computer A connects through ethernet to the router.


Computer B runs XP Pro SP3.
Computer B connects to the internet through the wireless on the router.

I'm trying to have the computers see each other.

I want the printer on A to be used from Computer B. I want a shared folder on each so we can transfer files between the two or work on files from one computer while they're stored on the other.

I've tried all the wizards and it is not doing it for me...

any help would be appreciated.

A shoes the printer and a shared folder in "network" with the shared printer.

usually this stuff just works for me but not today

Yes, it's some fun with 7.

You need to go to Network and Sharing Center and ensure the following:

1. Your computer network is set to Home or Work as the type. NOT Public

2. Go to "Advanced Sharing Settings", which is a link in the left pane

3. Expand "Home or Work"

4. Ensure the following:
a. Turn ON Network Discovery
b. Turn ON File and Print Sharing
c. Turn OFF password protected Sharing
d. Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers

5. Ensure your shares (printer, and file) have the "Everyone" user in them, and that user has the appropriate permissions for the share.

You should then be good to go.

done all of 1 - 4.

I don't understand #5 though.

Tried it again having completed 1 - 4 but no luck from the XP machine trying to connect.
In add printers it can see there is a "windows network" but double clicking on it only brings up the network again.

What if you go start-run on the XP machine and type in \\thenameofyourW7\

the name being as itself appears to the W7 computer in its own network neighborhood.

does that still show the computer and everything it's shared? Then you can (right?) click on its printer and set it up.

Start with the basics, can each computer access the internet and/or ping one another?

Can you log into the router and ensure each computer is given and IP address?

Make sure you don't have isolation turned on in the router configuration.

That will prevent wireless clients from being able to access the wired network.

In the router config i can see each computer, with an IP address, Host Name, and MAC address.

I can ping the wireless computer fine from the wired one.

Can you ping the wired computer from from the wireless one? (you only mentioned one-way, so I have to ask).

on the XP box, do start, run \\192.168.x.xx (IP of Windows 7 machine) and see what happens.

i want to totally default the router an start over.

i "set it as an access point" and now i can't get into the router setup page anymore...

OK have reset the works,.

Now I can see the wireless PC in my "network" looking from the W7 Machine.

However, I can't ping the wireless one from the wired one any more. edit - i can ping the router and W7 PC from the wireless one.

In "network" in the explorer it shows up as "RALINK CLIENT". when i want to configure it I am asked for a pairing code...

help!

Do you have any sort of funky wireless software running on the XP box?

You shouldn't have changed the configuration of the router, it was likely setup correctly from the sounds of things.

If you can ping both ways, there is connectivity; ICMP traffic is getting through, so they aren't being put on separate VLAN's or anything funky, which happens when you have wireless isolation enabled.

What do you have for services under the properties of the adapter on the XP box? If you've got 7 setup as I detailed on the first post, then that is absolutely correct, and it should work without issue.

I don't understand why I can ping the W7 from the XP wireless but can't ping back.

It seems like the W7 has in its own network LAN connecting to the router, and there is a wireless WLAN which includes the router and XP wireless machine. the two networks don't see each other.

Tried looking for wireless isolation settings, no good in the Belkin setup page.

1. Make sure you have the most recent firmware on the Belkin.
2. Make sure both the Windows 7 and Windows XP box have the same subnet mask.
3. Try turning off Windows Firewall on the Windows 7 box and see if you can ping it. It may be blocking ICMP.

4. If none of the above works, send me a PM and I can look at it remotely.
