Hello, I have a 2009 Toyota Yaris & 2005 Toyota Tacoma V6. Both are about 90,000 miles. Mixed California city & highway use. I have pretty much used Redline 5w30 for most of the life of the vehicles with OEM filter & oil changed every 4-5,000 miles. I'm happy with the Redline oil, especially since it was very cheap for me to buy. Now I'm unable to buy it cheap & I'm seeing many posts about other oils being better in quality like Pennzoil Ultra & Castrol Edge. What do you guys recommend & why? I'm reading some posts about Redline not being as good as before & not sure why since the wear of my engines is excellent & I passed smog with nearly perfect readings. No oil consumption, or engine problems. Thanks!

First of all RedLine oil is overkill for the types of vehicles you have. Pennzoil Platinum and Edge FST are overkill for most engines I surmise as well. Pick a major brand on sale with your favorite color labeling or flip a coin. In Cali you are not exposing your car to extreme temps (especially cold) so just pick out a good name brand oil, they will work as well as the RL did.
4-5k? Whatever is on sale would be fine. If you want to get picky Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra. Castrol Edge is overkill for low mileage. Quaker State synthetic would be appropriate for 5k without blinking and keep it clean enough to eat off.
If you think there is a better oil then Redline, keep thinking. If you want to get it cheaper, try running it for 15k miles instead of 5, and you just cut your price by 66% and your engine will be just as lubricated. You just might to run a synthetic filter with that long of an OCI though, just a thought.

Red Line is not exactly a long drain champ, nor is it especially good in applications that don't involve prolonged high oil temperatures.
If I had a track car, I'd consider Red Line oil, although T6, Mobil 1 0W-40, Mobil 1 15W-50 and GC have all been shown to work well in track cars.
If I could get Red Line cheap, as the OP said he used to be able to, I'd run it in my daily drivers, although they need Red Line oil even less than they need the synthetics I typically use.

If I read that link right..he changed his oil filter and topped off his oil afterwards. Id be willing to bet most any synthetic would have similar results. Changing the filter would filter the dirt in the oil and the top off would replenish the add pack. Saying an oil is great on that basis isnt exactly a good way to judge it. Best way is a used oil analysis from a long run with no added oil and no filter changes. 4-5 k miles is nothing for any decent conventional or synthetic oil.

The big and on that is it sounds like it is a diesel so a longer OCI is really no problem anyway. But the several tear downs of engines running redline have been ridiculous, they look like brand new after 100k. Plus the results I have had are nothing short of a miracle. I'm sure there are some oils that would have giving me similar results, but I happened to try redline and my annoying Hemi tick is no more. Anyhow, there are plenty of great oils out there but for anyone to suggest Redline isn't one of them is just something other then oil knowledge.
