I bought this magnetic base digital angle gauge from HF to give you an idea,
http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-angle-gauge-95998.html

what i'm looking for is something similar in size, very small size about 2" or less, but shoots a laser out one end to get the direction a surface is pointing.
If it had a magnetic base that would be a plus, but it just needs one flat edge to be able to go against a surface then a laser comes out the other side to tell be what vector that surface is normal to in order to adjust and line things up.

The reviews on that angle gauge indicate it's great for DIY home wheel alignments.

If your laser is on a 2" base the surface had better be squeaky clean to give you any sort of precision.

Would a laser gun sight work for you?

gun sight no go. whatever flat surface the laser pointer rests on, the laser has to point outward normal from that surface.
i thought a better description might be laser alignment tool, but nothing comes up related to what i'm looking for.

trying to measure the horizontal alignment of the transmission to the rear axle in a car. i have the u-joint phasing in the vertical direction set no problem using the level. but i can't figure out an easy way to check horizontal alignment.

Glue Or tape a laser pointer to Carpenters square, check the calibration against a large
3-4-5 triangle.
