Need Help with a Small Engine

Have a new Yamaha 2200IS generator. It seems to be misfiring at idle... almost sounds electrical.

Can you take a listen and give me some pointers?

Thus far I installed a Hardline Tachometer/Hour meter and put 3.7 hours on it. At any rate the RPM is spot on around 3500 in Eco and 4900 at full tilt.

The Gas is good. I doubt a new carburetor would be plugged up or that a carb could cause this issue could it? I would usually expect a surging.

I did and the Seller's take on it is to send it to a shop.. it is under warranty. Shop said, it's normal for it to misfire... and attempted to charge me $152 to tell me that.

Any ideas how to fix it? Also you agree you can hear it that it is significant enough that I should do something about it right?

I checked all the electrical connectors are tight too, and verified the spark plug gap.

Do you have a load on it. It sounds like its hunting and that is normal without a load. Find something that draws 1000 watts or so and let it run with that on it for a couple hours and see if it steadies down. With no load and at idle it is going to run a bit rich and spit every once in a while. Too much idle and you will carbon up your plugs.

I had a load and pulled it off. As soon as I pulled the load off, it seems to start to miss.

It sounded good to me? I heard a little rpm variation but well within “totally normal?” I didn’t hear any miss?

I’ve had a Bunch of tiny carburetor problems with Hondas equivalent - even with a small inline fuel filter. At least with mine, I have to always run it or drain the float bowl dry to prevent surging issues, otherwise I have to pull the main jet and run a filament through it. Every time. Thankfully, Honda designs the unit to be run dry per the fancy rotary switch/valve, which I only learned when I bothered to read the manual.

Take the side off and watch the throttle, I have EF3000iSE and it sounds similar without a load. I think it needs the carb cleaned again, as it seems to be running a bit lean, revs up a touch, and then the throttle closes a bit, and repeats.

Is it still on the OEM plug, and is it one of those 'Torch' branded ones? That's what a huge percentage of these overseas inverter genny's come with.

If so, throw it in the trash and put an NGK in it. Report back.
What is the NGK number for the Chonda motors ?

If it runs solid under load and has a little burble unloaded, I'd bet that it's just a hair lean. If you want to fix it, it will require some modification. Orrrrrr...... You can live with it.

Yeah, got where I just order carbs for the Chonda’s

I always have to go digging for it, can't remember offhand.

--Edit--

My recordkeeping is worthless tonight.

My little 1000 watt Wen takes this

NGK CR5HSB

But I looked in my service history for my bigger Wen and all I put was 'Changed to NGK Plug'

So, yep, I'm an idiot on this one. I don't know if I put my spare NGK for the little Wen in it or not. Now I have to go looking and fix it.

--Edit-Edit--

Nope, not the same in the bigger motor.

Probably same/similar for the Yamaha

Got to digging around for the Yamaha manual. At least the one I was able to find shows:

Difference in the ES and the HS should be reach with the ES being longer. I'm certainly no plug expert, but you certainly want to get the right length reach in case there's no room in there and the piston crashes into the longer plug that Wen recommends. Only a 1/4" difference......shouldn't matter, but I'd get the right one.

That sound is typical of an idle circuit running too lean.
My guess too. Not electrical if RPMs are steady and solid, means it's getting good impulse. These things are usually set on the lean side for slow speed from factory. You might be able to access/adjust low speed jet/screw. If so take it out a half turn and see what happens. Also, could be fueling at the jet needle due to improper float height, but that would be a stretch.

Okay, so it has a genuine NGK BPR6HS, and I confirmed the gap.

I guess I could try replacing the plug and cleaning the carburetor.

Try premium gasoline. I have found that some small engines run a bit more rich with premium. I don't understand why.
