Need help choosing tansmission fluid for Dodge

My truck a 1994 Dodge, the dipstick read use Dexron II. Should I use Dexron III Macron, Macron IV, or AFT+3 or 4 (what ever that Chryslar transmission fluid is)?

It was completely rebuilt in 2001 by the dealership so I don't have any idea what they use. Nothing is wrong, it operates fine and I'd like to keep it that way, but its due for a change.

You didn't say if it was a RAM 1500, Dakota, engine size, transmission type, or give any other data.


You can use our AutoGlide DexronIII/Mercon if it is an automatic and our SynchroGlide if it is a manual transmission.

Oh yea. Its an automatic. Not really sure which model. I have a Hayens manual says its a "A-998" overdrive.

While the owner's manual says to use ATF plus/Mopar type 7176 or Dexron II is the ATF plus is not available, the Haynes manual says to use Dexron II. Now I've read researching the internet only use ATF plus, ATF+3 and 4 while the dipstick reads to use Dexron II.

I've been searching on the internet and have read not to use and Macron or Dexron type fluids and that most Chryslar automatic transmission failures are due to using the wrong fluid. Additionally I've read never to use any type of additives.

Whats the scoop with Chryslar type automatics and special fluids?

Whats really blowing my mind is I've also read don't use anything in a Chryslar type vechile other that ATF plus, ATF+3 or 4 except in trucks which have a different type of transimssion and never said which fluid to use.

This subject is really confusing.

This is an ol' transmission that isn't too picky about fluid choice.

The newest DexronIII(H) should work well.

There is also a TSB stating that the newest ATF+4 should be used since it supercedes the older ATF Plus +2 and +3 specs.

Bullet I would use the ATF+3 available from most parts store as it is 7176 type ATF. The ATF+4 is even better so long as your dealer does not rape you for it as they are the only source for ATF+4 fluid! A lot of Dodge transmission guys say to ignore the DexII recomendation on the dipstick! I have only used ATF+3,ATF+4 adn Redlines Synthetic 7176 replacement for all ATF+2,+3,+4 fluids wich is C+ATF. My Dad tried DexII in my mothers plymoth and it shifted like crap! I had to go to the parts store and get some ATF+3 and drain it and refill it to fix it!

Local dealer is asking $4.76/qt for ATF+4. Had them pull pan service the 46RE (727-derived) in my 95m mile '01 Ram V8-318. Band adjustment, filter replacement done.

Added the recommended amount of ARX and am now ready to drain/flush and refill with SCHAEFFERS 204-Supreme, which, purchased thru our site sponsor at a good price for three cases (bought enough for two vehicles).

Vehicle was shifting softly/sloppily. The service and 4-quarts of MOPAR ATF+4 plus the ARX brought the shifts to normal. Looking forward to the complete drain & flush of both the ATF and power steering fluid this week (PSF also treated with ARX). This has worked well on other vehicle over the past 50m miles leaving me confident of long-term reliability (annual fluid changes and any other services).
