Seeking advice P0191. Observe for now? Change fuel pump? Backprobe fuel rail pressure sensor?

2002 Ford Taurus Duratec. Rare hard starting for a week. When hot, rarely fails to start. Or tries to start and sputters, runs rough and stops. Crank speed sounds normal. Battery >12.6 volts with car off. Weather when no or delayed start happened was about 75 degrees and sunny. Putting foot lightly on gas seems to help but not sure. Always starts within one minute. Did not then listen for fuel pump when no start occurred. Pending code was P0191.

No repairs ever done to fuel system.
No other codes or pending codes. No P0171. After driving every day on short errands since start of problem, pending code cleared itself 3 days later. Not able to use fuel pressure gauge borrowed from Oreillyauto. Car has Schrader type valve but fuel pressure gauge always showed 0 when connected using Ford adapter with GM and Chrysler fitting as permanently on fuel pressure gauge as instructions for gauge recommend. Have not used T fitting to connect fuel pressure gauge. Might take too long. Pushing center of schrader valve on fuel rail causes fuel to spurt out if had cycled ignition key to "on" with engine not running" to run fuel pump. At key on engine running KOER, code reader shows at idle fuel rail pressure usually 38. Running FRP near 38. Up to 44. Service manual says fuel pressure range 20-60 psi.

Car owned by family member hundreds of miles away so do not have luxury of repairing at will.

What to do?
1. Nothing
2. Change fuel pump and fuel filter.
3. Something else

Thanks

Changing the fuel filter is cheap maintenance, but unlikely the cause.

Possible causes would be power supply issue, fuel pump control module or pump. A quick and simple thing to try would be to swap the fuel pump relay with another identical relay and see if that fixes it.

Switched fuel pump relay with AC relay. AC still works. No start hasn’t happened again since the above event. Pending code has cleared itself.

Hope it continues to work out for you.

Wife's aviator was doing the same and setting the p0191 and sometimes a p1233 (Iirc). Swapped the relay with another (horn?) and problem solved. Horn still works too.

Issue was intermittent. Replaced fuel pump assembly a year ago with Delphi in picture. No problem since then.
