Need advice/Opinions

-I have a 2006 Jeep grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7 liter Hemi(Yes it has a Hemi)and it has 600 miles on her now.After the dealer changes the oil I'm going to switch to synthetic oil at 5,000.The oil (synthetic)that I'm going to use is Mobil 1 5W20 with a Fleetguard(LF3604)filter.I'm looking for advice as to which oil/filter to stay with.My choices are in oil are Mobil 1 or Valvoline SynPower-both are 5W20.I don't know whch of the two oils are the best.Oil filter choices are Fleetguard-LF3604/K&N oil filter HP2004/Mobil 1-M1-204/Purolator-PureOne/PremiumPlus.The longest drain interval for the 5.7 liter Hemi is 6,000 miles.After break-in(5,000 miles)the truck will see mostly highway and I plan on keeping her 8-10 yrs.Any help would be great.Thanks

Honestly won't matter to much. Mobil 1 gives good consistant results. Plus its a "True" Synthetic. The Synpower is not a "True" synthetic. It has at least some HydroCracked Petroleum oil (Referred to as Group III) Not really sure about the FleetGuard Filter. K&N and Mobil 1 filters are probably overly expensive without adding a whole lot of value. I am partial to the K&N as they are built like a Russian Tank and reportedly have a greater flow rate.

Purolator PureOne filters are good filters. I personally use my OEM filter (Nissan 5280-9E000 for a '97 Maxima) or a Pureone. This is from info gathered on Maxima.org and put in an oil analysis spreadsheet. The K&N and Mobil 1 filters are also reportedly good filters, but I can get two PureOne or Nissan OEM for the same price. Wix is held in high regard, as are Bosch and even STP. I even had a rumor that the Bosch, STP, and Mobil 1 are made in the same plant, but have manufacturer specific filter media. I don't have any facts to back that up, so take it for what it's worth.
To me, it seems that most oil filters nowadays will do an adequate job concerning flow, and even for the most part, filtering. Anti drainback design is very important to me, too. I've used a Fram (shhhh, don't tell no one), but on initial startup, there was a horrendous "grating" type noise for a second or two. This noise is absent when using the Nisaan OEM or PureOne.

For oils, I'm partial to Castrol. Does your Jeep spec a 5w20? Just seems a little light for a V-8, but I could be wrong. Personally, I've had 2 consecutive bad used oil analysis with Mobil 1 5w30, so I've switched back to GTX 5w30. My engine is quieter running GTX. It may just be my Nissan VQ30 engine doesn't like Mobil 1. My mother-in-laws GMC (350ci) has had a Mobil 1 diet since birth, some 60,000 + miles ago. When checking her oil, I noticed her dipstick has a discoloration that looks like varnish, only to the oil level. It would not wipe off, but didn't feel any different than the rest of the dipstick. More like a stain, if that's possible. She asked if that was normal, so I showed her my shiny dipstick. Now she wants hers that way, too.

There are plenty of good oils out there. I don't think Mobil 1 is always the right answer for every engine (let the flaming begin). Some have good results with it, I've had bad. If you can find some used oil analysis of your engine running various oils, you could make a much better decision. And if you're not interested in running extended intervals, there are some very good conventional oils on the market, too.

Dave. That sounds like varnish with mobil 1. I would be very interested in how long your mother-in-law goes between changes. Very hard to believe Mobil 1 would varnish unless bad pcv valve or extended changes. Inquiring minds want to know! I have had excellent results with Mobil 1 in two vechicles and think the oil is hard to beat.

We've touched on this subject before, I have a 2005 Jeep grand cherokee with the 5.7L hemi. I've personally decided to stick with the 3000 mile recommended OCI with a conventional. My main reason for not going to synthetic is that the manual doesn't give any special consideration to using a synthetic. It just says if you do ANY of these things, we recommend schedule B. I've decided on havoline 5w-20 and a wix filter. I guess I've become a BITOG cool aide drinker

. I do use mobil 1 5w-20 in my accord though, and seems to be doing well. If you are diligent with any decent regimin, you're hemi should last a long time.
