Change the feeding time(back off an hour every few days) until you find the most peaceful feeding time.
Get a 2nd cat.
Cat can be substituted for chicken in any recipe.
Leave the door open. Cats also have guard instinct and normal hunt instincts. If you're home, you're not considered safe unless she can see you. And, she needs to make her morning security rounds throughout the apt to make sure no critters got in. She'll probably want to guard you from the tallest area. Put a cat bed on the bookshelf, chest, hutch, or dresser.

We use a water bottle to discourage behaviors we don't want. Our cats would scratch on the door and we did the water bottle thing to them. It worked for a while, but they forgot too quickly.
We eventually put a baby gate up so they couldn't paw at the door. Sure, they could jump over it or climb it. But we put it so close to the door it was uncomfortable for them to leap it, but they were enough away that they couldn't stretch over it and get to the door.
Of course, we are in a house and can just lock them in the laundry room with the food/water and litter box.
But the water spray bottle is so much more fun!

We have a big Main Coon (we think that's what he is) that will jump on the bed and lick your eylids. I cured him of that habit with the quickness. We are having to ration his food to help him lose some weight. My wife gets up around 6 am and feeds him a 3rd of his daily amount. He gets another 3rd around 4 or 5 pm. Then the last of it around 10 pm.
We have him on that schedule. However, if we forget to feed him in the morning on a weekend or something he'll sit on my wifes nightstand and knock things off of it one by one. I laid in bed one morning and watched him. Paw at the cell phone just a little tillit falls on the floor, look at us, nothing. Next comes the bottle of hand moisturizer, bits the floor, looks at us. Nothing. Keeps going until I try to kill him or my wife feeds him, LOL.

1. Feeding her late at night seems to work so far. Hope it's enough from now on...
2. It turns out brianl703's vacuum cleaner idea is workable after all! We set it up last night. Haven't had to use it yet; I'll post back if we do.

oh wow, I'm going through this same exact problem. my boy cat is 10 months and even if my door is open, he's comes in meowing and standing on my chest in bed.
i was set on buying a 2nd cat for him but read in a book that you shouldn't do that and only buy a 2nd cat because u want one not to give company to your current cat.
i love this guy but he's driving me nuts. He only gets dry food and its out at all times for him so its not food and he has as ton of toys.

Jay, your cat, especially young ones, wants company more than toys.
Until he is about 2 years old, you need to play a lot with him in order him to be a happy and solitary cat after.
My first cat was like that, but I was 12 when I got him, so I played a lot with him. When he was adult, our home was just for food and sleep, he was always outside. He was still very affectionate with us when he was in the house.
My current cat is always in my legs and always meowing for nothing: He wants me to look at him when he eats!!!
When he was a baby, I was 30 and did not take time to be with him and play with him. Now, he is totally insecure.
