FYI: The AutoZones here (New Jersey) are advertising a pretty good looking set of tools. Go to their website to see if it's being offered in your region.

Cheap tools like to fail and take fasteners with them, so there's that effect. Then you've got a newbie with a rounded-off bolt on his list of problems.

However, according to my post-doctoral craigslist research, young snap-on and matco owners give up on automotive repair too

Tekton tools on Amazon seem to be very nice for the price. I bought a couple of their ratchets and pliers and I really like them. I plan on buying more of their stuff to keep in my vehicle emergency tool kits.

I would recommend buying a Husky nylon tool bag, and fill it with a metric ratchet set, metric combo wrenches, a couple of pliers and a screwdriver set.

This would get you started and could be done for <$100.
