Need a new spare. Does it matter?

The Jeep's spare tire is 9-1/2 years old, time for replacement. It's a cheap Discount Tire brand tire.

I'd like to get a cheap spare, it'll age out again with full tread. Discount Tire has their "Provider Entrada" tires for $61, my brother had them on his Chevy truck and they road fine. Walmart has the Kumho Solus TA11 for $61 as well. Just wondering if you guys think it really matters which one to get.

Maybe one would be slightly tougher than the other if I got a flat on a dirt road, then the spare might survive better.

It has to be the stock 215/75-15 size to fit in the back. Jeep has 235/75-15 tires on it (open diffs so no worries).

That is the tire I got for my spare tire replacement. Good choice. I loved the price. My previous spare was starting to split out and I was worried if I had to use it I doubted I would get any distance on it if I really had to.

with just those 2 options I'd go kumho its a decent brand.

If he could find one that wasn't already half way to cracking, this might make sense depending on what the going rate is for a junkyard tire. I doubt the math on age vs. cost vs. install cost would work out in his favour. I could be wrong though.

+1 or a used tire place. You can get a slightly used one for $35 mounted and balanced. Will walmart mount (put the tire on the rim) and balance for free if you buy the tire there?

I'd go for full sized. The spare tire holder will fit a 31x10.5 tire if you take the bolt thingy out and put it in the upper hole. You should easily be able to fit a 235/75-15 there.

Setting up with full sized spares can be interesting - dealers have a thousand iterations of sizes and types - but yesterday I mounted my 3rd exact rim/tire/TPM. About 75% of my flats I find at home, in the outer row, and in some Hankook garbage you don't find in this village - oh, and Murphy scheduled them for days I have to be 90 miles away in two hours.
And the 4WD & AWD's can't spin weenie wheels (and I'm oversized) ...

A little extreme - but going to buy three next time ... And the best old one takes the stand by role ...

I'll pop off a tire and see if it fits in there. That spare is really crammed but it's worth a shot! A Goodyear Wrangler in 235/75-15 is only $12 more.

He lives in Phoenix, heat kills batteries and tires. For a few bucks more a new one makes sense.

Nick, pretty sure I had a 235 spare in my 94. Get one and put it in rotation.

Worst comes to worst, you remove the little metal plate that holds up the donut spare. But you may not have that if you have a 215 tire in there right now.

I was able to fit a 31x10.5 in mine with the wheel flipped around so the valve stem was facing the glass. I also got a 235/85-16 in, but I can't latch the left side of the seat. 31'' tire is as far as you can go for a spare on one of these apparently.

Are you going to be buying a new set of tires for anything soon? Ask them to throw in a used tire they have kicking around the shop. I went upsize slightly on the CRV tires and do need a spare of similar diameter, and the shop just gave me a used one and mounted it for free.

both are cheap tires. Kumhos suck IMO I'd much rather jump on Discount tire's brand.
