Neat guitar work

Yep, Neil is great.
I don't really like Melissa Etheridge myself, but she showed up for her gig with nothing but herself and her guitar, which I thought was cool. (Even if she does play an Ovation).

97tbird,

I couldn't agree with you more re Neil Young. I have always thought that 'Like a Hurricane' is one of the rawest, emotion-laden songs ever done. I love all sorts of guitar rock, but I think the solo work he does in that song is some of the most powerfull stuff caught on tape by any artist. Gives me chills sometimes, listening to the end of it. Thanks so much for the link, I've always wanted to see a live clip of it!

Good thread. Agree with the sentiment of technical ability vs soul ... I'm not too much of a Satriani fan. I do like Neil Young's music (Harvest Moon, Heart of Gold).

I like some of Jeff Beck's music. Yes to David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler - what about Gary Moore's Still Got the Blues? Heh. Now I'll be whistling Ozzy/Zach's No More Tears - tricky stuff trying to whistle his guitar work.

Billy Howerdale's work in the 2 "A Perfect Circle" albums are is very good; they're very subtle, and his tone has a soft, bell-like quality to it...listen to the song "the noose" from the album "the 13th step" with a good stereo system, and you'll see what I mean..it's haunting.

I liked Mark Knopfler until I learned how he copied off of JJ Cale...and made all that money...MK is not a bad show off like Satriani & co, and has a heck of a lot more talent in composing, and actually conveying feelings, but he had rare moments of coming close to just a "gimmicky" player.
Snowy white, Lindsey Buckingham are other underrated guitarists, IMO.

Any here familiar with Derrick Trucks? Son of Butch Trucks, Drummer for Alman Bros. Derrick's still early 20's and great!

Also a huge fan of Warren Hayes (Government Mule) formerly with Allman's also.

Satch is great. Some of his songs I can do without, but some are absolutely amazing. I have a couple of his albums, and g3 albums. Though personally, I prefer Steve Vai or Eric Johnson

My brother plays guitar in cover band and also has his own band. He's on John Petrucci level in terms of technicality. He was playing through note for note Under a Glass Moon solo. He's that good. The stuff he has on his myspace doesn't show this, but he had to tone it down and make it more accessible for mass play.

He and I are both fans of most of the same guitarists. (Satriani, VH, Vai, Slash, John Petrucci/Inqwie Malmsteen, Alan Holdsworth, Eric Johnson.
