Napa ProSelect 1040 Oil Filter, in use for about 3 months in my mom's '03 Malibu. 3,100 miles on the filter, driven during the coldest months of the winter in a 50/50 highway combination. Oil used was Valvoline MaxLife 5w30. She drives the car very gentle and lets the car warmup for a minute before taking off. This is the 2nd filter in a row I've cut open that had hard, brittle pleats that were all bent up. The oil itself was not very dark and there was no sludge/debris in the pleats. The black junk you see on the baseplate appears to be some sort of assembly glue. It was stuck to it and wouldn't come off, almost a paint-like substance. The pleats broke in my fingers under very little pressure. Just simply trying to spread two pleats, they both broke. The car had its intake manifold gasket(s) replaced about 6 months ago and has had 3 oil changes since.

It still looks to me like there's leftover moisture in filter. Not severe, but that glazed look to the media just says moisture to me. All of my filters just look like dirty/tinted/darkened media

..but..were the filters purchased at the same time ..or are they from the same lot#??

The last filter I cut open was a SuperTech and had this same look to it, in a different car (A '99 Kia Sephia) this was a Napa from an '03 Malibu and as far as I know, neither car has any mechanical issues. I put another ProSelect 1040 on her car and I'll be changing it again after 5,000 miles, using Havoline Synthetic 5w30, except this time in warmer months and I'll see if that makes any difference. Oh, and I also put a ProSelect 1040 on my sister's Daewoo and I'll cut that one open when it reaches 3,000 miles as well.

Another thing I just realized, this filter sat in my garage for a couple of days before I cut it open, could that have anything to do with it? Same with the SuperTech from the Kia. That one sat in the garage for a week before I cut it open... just pondering.

I have noticed the same problems with many cheap filters when I cut them open when I was working.Thin and brittle elements
