I made a mistake tonight. My 135I goes to the dealer tomorrow SM for a free oil change. Wanted to grab an oil sample, so I went under to crack the drain plug thinking I'd dribble the oil into the bottle then tighten the plug. Especially since it is a magnetic plug, no big deal, right? Wrong.

Got the sample and right after, the plug fell out!

Drained all the oil. Whoops. At 260f, it was too hot to stop. Problem was the oil pan had some old rags and dust in it.

So not wanting to put fresh oil in just to drain it tomorrow, she sat there and we poured all the oil through coffee filters to strain and clean it. I poured, she held a funnel with filter in each hand and strained. Not comfortable. Took nearly two hours with the sun going down and really bad Mosquitos.

Am I lucky or what?

What a keeper. I wouldn't have done that to save 20 dollars in oil though. I sure hope you rewarded her for her efforts.

I am sorry but I had to laugh. I can picture that scene, I'm sure she wasn't a happy camper but she did it. You owe her one.

Next time tell the guy who's draining the oil to take a sample.

Done something like that before. My S4's drain hole is absolutely enormous and there's nearly 10L of fluid...friggin Niagara Falls.

The lesson to be learned is to get a sample pump.

One should not take a sample from the first few ounces anyway. I let it go for maybe a QT before taking the sample.

Im not doing the oil change, it is a freebie from BMW. I dont trust the dealer/tech to do it properly... And in a car with no dipstick, it cant just be pulled out.

Unfortunately it would be at least $42, and for oil for one day and less than 100 miles, this seemed to be the best option.

Given that it was filtered finer than what an oil filter likely would, I can't see a problem.

I was willing to put new BMW oil in, and she was happily willing to help filter. I AM VERY lucky.

You realize that the financial reward for all the time you spent doing that dirty, hard work was far less than minimum wage......

I always find time value of money arguements funny.

If this was Tuesday at 1pm I'd say you have a point. But on Friday at 7pm, neither of us are working, nor would we consider working.

So it would have been a net loss of 7qt of ACEA A3 rated syn oil, for one day's use.

I thought that was wasteful, doubly do since the oil I'm having changed had only about 2000 miles on it anyway (car has 3700). Still for warranty purposes and part of the complimentary service program, it was time.

I didn't feel there wS a good solution, but SI ce we werent working, this was the most net-economical path...
