My recreation of actor preparations for shirtless scenes and why it’s a bit of a fib

I’m on vacation this week in Cape Cod and so I have a bunch of extra time on my hands and I was reading a story about how actors prep for and how lighting enhances their shirtless scenes. The story was about Huge Jackman who lifts just before the scene for a pump, starves himself for a week before, and dehydrates himself the day before shirtless scenes. On top of that, they make sure the lighting overhead casts shadows. The did this a lot for Tom Hardy who played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

My wife was busy taking picture this week and I kept looking at them thinking, “Bruh…do you even lift?” At the time, I hadn’t lifted in about a week and I hadn’t been taking creatine for about a week. I went back to the gym today, which I now know strategically has great overhead lighting, feeling like a weakling, and after I finished lifting I looked in the mirror and thought, wow, good overhead lighting, a pump, and 4 days back on creatine really does the trick! I just though there was a noticeable and interesting difference consistent with the article.

I’m 46, 6’5” and 275lbs, and have been lifting with no breaks for about 6 years. The kid is my 14 year old who is now 6’2”, still growing, and at least an inch taller than his 17 and 19 year brothers. I’m going to be sore tomorrow…lol.

Showoff!

j/k. Nice job. Someday I'm going to figure out how to get a decent balance of work and exercise.

I’m a business owner with 26 employees but only work 4 days per week, I go to school year round for my MBA (August is literally the only month I do not have school), and have three kids. Part of it is you just have to make it a priority and the other part is while I exercise and eat well, I also burn the candle at both ends, but that’s just my personality. As my father used to say, you’ll have plenty of time to rest when you’re dead. Consequently and on second thought, he died at 48, so maybe don’t listen to that one, but he did not take care of himself either. I’m to the point now where if I don’t lift it really affects my sense of wellbeing.

Yeah I know. But I don't... or don't care? not sure, because I'm quite sure that if I wanted to, I'd make it happen. We prioritize what we want, and make excuses for everything else.

Someday I'll figure out what bugs me. I used to live to work, liked what I did, and over the last few years, that's shifted--and I haven't recovered.

Actors usually go for PEDs. SARMS, anabolic agents, roids, beta-2 agonists, peptic hormones, metabolic modulators, growth factors and mimetics, masking agents and diuretics. Well, not only actors. Also body builders, strength athletes, and other athletes. Even young teens are often on juice and stacks of pancakes. They even abuse beta blockers. That's not to say they don't work out to get in shape - you have to put in the work but getting a little "help" is normal. Jackman has been very vague about his "program." It's definitely not just chicken, rice, and broccoli and 3 hours in the gym for a few months. Dude's approaching his late 50s. His workouts are so-so.
