1994 Safari SLX XT. Paid $450 for it. It needs a few little patches to the body and a thermostat and a windshield. I was driving home on Sunday (having bought the van that Wednesday), following behind an 18 wheeler. A piece of ice which must have been 1 foot square flew off the truck's trailer and into my windshield. Insurance is going to cover it, the price of the parts are something like 560 bucks. Van's going in for repair tomorrow and I'll be getting a rental car for the day too.

How well does it run? What kind of mileage does it have? What kind of oil are you going to run? What type of coolant?

It runs good, hesitates a bit when I rev it but it does nice one-wheel burnouts!

I think the thermostat is sticking open though, I don't think it ever really gets up to full operating temperature and my last tankful I only got 15.6 mpg average from it. Right now it has about 230,000 miles. Bottom end is all original I was told but the heads were new or replaced or something to that effect. I want to run a high mileage oil, I've got a slightly used almost full jug of 10w30 Maxlife syn in the shed I'm going to use then after that I'll probably use Maxlife dino. I seem to have a leaking radiator or cooler line, I can see antifreeze-colored snow where I park and the coolant level has dropped. I'm trying some Bar's Leak in it and if that doesn't help then I guess it's gonna need some repair.

You need one of these:

I rented a new AWD astrovan and it only got mileage in the low teens. Are those

imperial gallons or did you do the US conversion?

I always use the US gallon. I filled it up (94 liters to fill it!), reset the trip odometer then drove. It started to run out around 400 miles, so I figure take 30-40 miles off of that and that'll give me an average fuel mileage number.

I bet that looked funny to passers-by, an old van with a busted windshield, drag racing with the turn signal on.

You should paint it up like an ice cream truck or something.

My camera is really #@$%! for taking night-time pictures or video. It was dark but the headlights on the van work quite well, they put out lots of light but my Kodak digital camera doesn't pick it up.
