My better half found this guy/girl lurking under my toolbox- evidently keeping an eye out for unwanted guests...

THAT looks like an unwanted guest! I hope you dispatched him/her to where ever spiders go in the great beyond! Gives me chills just to look at that monster!

I don't know... Maybe I should take a poll of BITOG members for a suiting name???

To the spider haters, sorry to say, but the eight legged critter stays. I need it for bug control and the occasional mouse...

William.

A dignified name...

How about Herman? As in Herman monster. I don't dislike spiders. About the only animal I really dislike is snakes.

I found something a lot like this in the garage at my cabin last weekend, propane torched the son of a monkey. Bug bombed the garage when I left.

D-con keeps the mice away and doesn't crawl on me while I'm under my car/other toys. I'd probably smash my head on things a lot more often with that crawling around...

You might be surprised... She found the spider last night and she actually went out again tonight to check to see if it was still around. She wasn't quite gutsy enough to try to pick it up though. She thought that it wouldn't move too fast, because as she was trying to touch it with the metal ruler, it would slowly move a leg and kinda back up. Until she got too close for spidy's comfort - that thing took off like a shot from a gun, and so did the wife!

I think what you have there is a very good specimen of a Fishing Spider. They are common in Kentucky and Ohio, and they get their name by partially submerging in water to ambush or attack prey. They are not always found near water though. It's a harmelss spider, it should not bite you but it is best not to provoke it either. That one is pretty cool if you ask me. Good-sized one too. Being that big I bet your new garage buddy is probably a female. Most male Fishing Spiders are about half the size of the females.

Maybe name her Charlotte and see how long she hangs around the garage?

For some reason this song came to mind (from Wikipedia): "Legs" is a song performed by the band ZZ Top from their 1983 album Eliminator. The video sounds interesting, I may have to look it up (interesting mental connections, from a spider to a ZZ Top video...) Anyway, I'd name her "Legs".
