Ok, after much reading on BITOG and some of my own research, here's the OCI program I am on:

2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser non-turbo - Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30 w/ an Amsoil Ea filter. about 6,000 miles per year - so this will be an ANNUAL oil change.

2004 Ford Expedition 5.4 liter - Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30, Amsoil EaO filter. I do about 15,000 mile per year. Factory OCI is 5,000. Might try to extend this to 10,000. I know the filter is rated for 25,000 but I am not so sure I want to try that....

Have you checked your plan against the severe service crtieria in the owners manual ?

Are you driving under any of those conditions during the OCI ?

If so you may need to modify the plan accordingly

On the 5.4 since you did not sound totally positive about the filter. Try, spliting the oil change in half or 7.5K. Just drain the oil, leave the filter on and refill. The filter won't be an issue for 15K....it's been tested well past 25K. And I would do the same with the PT and leave the filter on for 2 years....If your worried about the filter and or oil do a one time midstream uoa with a particle count.

Good points - yep - the Cruiser is short trips, fair amount of idling . Factory says 10W-30 for temps we will encounter here in North Carolina. Sever service OCI is 3,000. I would hope w/ a leading syn. and that Amsoil filter I would be ok for the 6,000 miles.

Yeah, I guess I have always been a factory OCI guy so this idea of 25,00 from a filter.... Hmmmm.... Interesting idea to change the oil and leave the filter. Trying to embrace a new way here!

It's warming up and all, but my personal opinion is that I think 5w-30 would be much better for the PT. Especially for startups during the winter months. Does the owner's manual say anything about 5w-30?

I think the oil filter interval of 15K/1 year would be fine if the engine is clean. I'd probably feel better about though if Amsoil actually published the data for holding capacity of it's specific filters rather than saying it's "proprietary". The EaO11 (if that's what you're using) has a very small surface area for the media. That doesn't tell the whole story, but since Amsoil won't give the holding capacity of the filter, it's about all there is to go on...

I consider all service, severe service. Use the severe service guidelines with a good synthetic.

Yep - manual says - I believe - that 10w-30 is fine if not encountering anything under +15F. Has never been fired up in the garage here in Charlotte under freezing. I kwo the dealership in MA, whie still under warranty, used 10W-30 in summer.

The EaO will last a year, 6K-10K no problem. You can have full confidence in those intervals.

Not sure where the small surface area comments are from, but I don't see many (any) filter companies publish filter "holding capacity".

Pablo - talk to me a little about the filter size, which BARELY fit on my wife's 2003 PT Cruiser non-turbo. Filter is LONG. I actually came across this video which seems to show a pretty darned good filter. Would a larger filter cause any pressure related issues?

Oh, and I am not using Amsoil - but using PP. I could not afford the $9 or so per quart, plus the shipping too, for the Amsoil. I am also wodnering if I used PYB with your EaO filter, could I still get eth 1 year/6,000 miles out of that combination?

The filters should work fine. I'd unscrew the filter drain it, and reinstall it. I just don't like the idea of a filter full of dirty oil with a fresh fill of oil. Draining it would make me feel better. JMO Just be sure to check for leaks if you do drain it.

The surface area is easily measured simply but pulling apart the filter. EaO11 is 156 sq in versus 234 sq in for the 820S. I know this isn't the whole story, since the Amsoil filter uses a synthetic/glass media. Heck, it could have more holding capacity than the 820S...but since they don't publish the holding capacity, there's simply no way to know for sure. Obviously though, total media area is one pretty important variable.

Holding capacity is available for both Motorcraft/Ford filters, and Pure One. There are some spec's in this thread here. , and Ford sent the spec sheet to me for the Racing filter as well. So, other manufacturers do make this data available.

A larger filter, within reason, will not cause any oil pressure issues. If you are looking at Amsoil and comparing to PP, you should compare the OE oil at $5.50 retail, under $5 PC or XL which is more stout than PP. Anyway, PYB - hmm....1 year? I think maybe not. 6K miles - maybe. But not for me. A UOA may look OK though.
