My roommate woke up this morning to find a pool of water in the kitchen, and my ice cream having turned into soup.

Although the apt manager has been called, what are some first steps I should take to troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks.

Sorry, it is still cold, but just not cold enough to keep the food completely frozen.

The refrigerator seems OK, but it doesn't seem to be working as well as it should.

Can you hear the compressor turn on? Are the fins/radiator thing on the back (or maybe in the bottom) covered in dust? Do the fins/radiator thing have a small fan that blows air across them - if so, does it work?

If it's an old fridge it might've developed a refrigerant leak.

No dust, fan seems to work fine. It is a Maytag unit that is about 7 years old. The maintenance guy is over right now, and is replacing the relay.

Disaster averted.

It's a good thing that you logged in here first.

Had that happen to an older (purchased 12 yrs ago) Frigidaire side-by-side a couple years ago. Turned out to be a bad defrost timer, which led to an ice blockage of the air passage between the fridge and freezer. Neither could hold a cold-enough temp till it was replaced.

It's not your property so it's good that you didn't attempt anything before the repair guy arrived.

Yes, it is fixed. A relay was the problem.
