Well, I just completed my first OHC valve adjustment on a Honda Odyssey van, J-series A4, with 144K miles on it. It was very well taking care of, under the front valve cover looked pristine. Sorry I didn't get any pics, wasn't really the priority. I have other pics of the engine, but not under the valve covers. I noticed that the rear bank looked.. um... not pristine. It wasn't bad, really, just some varnish. but the varnish was uniform over everything. This side has the PCV valve in it, which had seen better days. We replaced the valve, and cleaned that side up a bit. It was strange to see one side looking so clean you could eat off of it, and one side with a varnish you could scrape off and build up accumulating in the corners. Does anyone here have experience with this?

You answered your own question. Its where the PCV is. Most of the smoke and fumes is drawn into this side.
Try using a lower NOAK oil and replace the PCV more often. Be happy you don't have the Touring model with IVTEC, you wouldn't be talking about a little varnish.
