My Favorite Tree

I've known this tree all my life. From up there you could see for many kilometers across the plains skirting the Danube. You could watch deer, hares, foxes and beavers sitting comfortably in that tree. If the nasty mutt (German shepard/rabid badger hybrid?

)from the nearby farm got out, the tree was our refuge. In the spring and summer we'd hang out along the Danube's beaches, go on bike trips on the levees, fly kites over those windy fields, play commandos in the cornfields, in the fall we picked field mushrooms, in the winter we had snowball fights and went skating and curling on the flooded and frozen fields. That tree was always there throughout the years. I was looking at satellite and aerial pictures on Google Earth and found out that the old tree is now gone. Just gone.

I believe the tree was a robinia or black locust tree, although it might have been an elm tree.

I may be going out on a limb here but I want to get to the root of the matter..........

Farmer Johann already got to the root of the matter, I think. The dang tree was simply in his way. From spring to fall that tree had of course leaves and was all green, unlike in this picture that was taken in January.

I have a tree like that, a big Longleaf Pine in the woods back home. It looks like it got struck by lightning and survived. It bends at a 90 degree angle about 5 feet up, the straightens again and goes vertical for about 60 feet. There's a big blackened hole in the trunk where may be found various things, like raccoons or possums. Or big spiders.

I have a favorite tree in my back yard and not one tree expert in north county San Diego has been able to identify it. Some guy came all the way from Phoenix and took samples. No luck. So even though I have no idea what it is, it's still my favorite.
