My engine warm-up may be insufficient

On the 5.0. I have adopted a new route to my work and other areas. When i wake up around 9AM or so, i go out to the car and start her up. I let her idle for about 30 seconds or so, so that nice 5w30 can flow around in it, as I have decided to go thin. After this 30 seconds, she finds first gear. One full minute or less later, two minutes maximum depending on the light for the highway right next to my house, I am through the light, a nice hard right, nice hard left, followed by one more nice hard left, it takes 15 seconds.. and I get her up to 60MPH for another two minutes before either coasting through another exit light that is green, or stopping at that light, continuing on another 5 minutes to my destination.

In this example, the day is at a nice summer temperature. The oil perhaps has flown around the engine, but not fully warmed? And then, when/if I move the car again which could be in a half hour or two hours, it likely never warmed up.

This is also the same oil i would drive hours on the highway with, and days on the roads for an interstate trip if the situation ever came up. I went with Pennzoil's amber high mileage 5w30.

Is my engine being treated fairly here? Or is it suffering under this scenario? It has under 200,000 miles.
 
The engine warm up seems perfect, but I'd think the oil doesn't get up to temp very often. Not sure its causing any problems, but moisture would be my concern.

Besides, i rev it very very gently, I am super smooth on the gas, no punches of the pedal. Also, this car will never see an over-rev of a cold engine. if it is a-revvin, it has likely been in motion 10 minutes or more!
 
Don't sweat it. Oil is everywhere in the engine within two seconds. Pull a valve cover if you have doubts. Good choice on the 5w30.

Look at your absolute viscosity in CSt for your Dallas "cold morning" then find one for Bear Scat, North Dakota, where they hammer cold engines and don't blow them up.
 
There are studies that show it takes up to 90 seconds to get oil to the top end at 75F. Hence my constant battle to get the start up viscosity down, even at 75F. It is a function of viscosity and the bypass spring at the oil filter.

I personally warm up my car in the morning.. During winter, I warm up for 3 minutes... During Summer/Warm Weather, I warm up for about 1 minute...

my 2006 toyota camry v6 is now 213,000 miles, and still strong.
 
I let the tach tell me when to take off. When it dips below 1000 rpm I take off. Where I live in the winter that could be up to 3 minutes. I don't like engaging a clutch when the engine is revving high, or slamming a transmission into gear. JMO

This is likely true of a pushrod engine that oil the rocker arms from oil flow up the push rods(of course this includes most modern OHV engines like the now old Ford 5.0, 460, SB/BB Chevys etc)... The engines that had a oil passage in the heads and the rockers on a shaft generally get oil in less time... OHC engines usually have oil flow in just a few seconds...

Rambling on...

The hoopla about oil pumps in bypass makes no sense to me... If it's bypassing at 90psi(just a figure I pulled out of the air), that means there is still 90psi fed to the moving parts... If the bypass were not there, excessive oil pressure(maybe 120-150psi)would either blow the filter or likely damage the drive to the pump... I've seen both of these happen in engines with high pressure pumps and thick oil... I'd guess virtually all engines go into bypass when first started on a cold morning, yet you seldom see a rod or crankshaft hanging out of any of them...
 
It doesn't take 90 seconds for a Windsor to get oil flowing out the rockers. It takes literally a couple of seconds. It is almost instant. I've owned a few of them.

Check on a cold morning when you first start it, it takes awhile, I've owned my share as well... Still have a modified(Trick Flow, heads, cam, etc)5.0 in a T-Bird I beat the snot out of at the strip and have no qualms about it...

I have. Mind you it had Mobil 1 5w30 in it at the time, but it always has almost instant top-end lubrication. Oil filter would have been a K&N, as I used to run those pretty much exclusively.

Heck, even after a cam swap, priming it with a drill, I don't think it took any more than 20-30 seconds to get oil coming out all the rockers.

I follow the same procedure. Not sure if it is necessary, but certainly makes sense to me! I hate feeling the transmission slam into gear.

It may apply to ATs which 'slam' into gear at higher idle revs, but the fear of using an MT clutch at 1200rpm seems grossly unwarranted.

The problem with running an engine with the oil pump in bypass mode really applies when the engine is already up to temperature.
Consiquently if you're running the spec' oil the oil pump will not be in by-pass but if you're running a heavier than spec' oil it very well could be and if it still is at WOT that's when problems arise because the oil flow through the engine is being partially diverted. The reduced flow will allow heat to build up in the bearings and elsewhere, and if it gets high enough engine damage will occur.
Just one example of why running a thicker oil than specified is rarely better and more often than not detrimental.
 
Unless its for my own sake (sickeningly cold in the car) then I almost never "warm up". I just get in and go. I have a similar scenario for when I leave work, I am about half a kilometre from the highway. I am usually accelerating to 60+ MPH within 2 minutes of turning the engine over. Have yet to have any problems though. (dilligent about oil!)

That is pretty much where i am at. 60+MPH in under two minutes, from key first turned. I wonder when our oil actually hits full temp doing that?

I also love changing my oil!

5w30 can serve me well. 5W-20 is tempting, but my engine is old-school enough i can stay at 5w30, or a 5W-20 with an HTHS of 5w30 (Redline 5W-20) if i HAD to.

Or Royal Purple, or RLI. However, this oil is good for now. I like it.
