I you decide to keep him there, and it sounds as though you may not have much choice, at the very least you should have a sit down with the powers that be and ask what procedures they are going implement to keep this from happening again. As mentioned you could report it to whatever agency oversees nursing homes, but I would first sit down with the home and get their response.

Yes, in my experience, many of the workers are paid a minimum and there tends to be a lot of turnover in employees. A very tough job imo.
 
Alzheimers is a terrible disease. My family has been trying to handle my grandfather's battle with it for a few years.

Perhaps someone was visiting a patient and your dad just followed them out the door? You will probably never know, but one thing is for sure...at least he made it home! I remember about 10 years ago when a man with advanced Alzheimers "went for a walk" and was found in the middle of a 1000 acre apple orchard a few days later. He was still alive, but in pretty rough shape.
