Just wondering...

what sort of music do you guys listen to?
I thought this ? might be a good way to get some idea, and perhaps new knowledge...?

to start off, here's what I like:
older:
Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Sinatra, Miles Davis, Ella Fritzgerald

newer: Tori Amos, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Crowded House, Tool, some Nirvana, a little Seether, and a little Chevelle...

Any feedback/opinions is welcome.

Your older list is good...I like the Stones and Beatles so what do I know...?

I like like a couple of your newer picks, but most not. I don't like the grindy grunge and I don't like hip-hop (they just don't go into my brain as "music").

I like:

Chris Rea, Swing Out Sister, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, 10,000 Maniacs, Sade, No Doubt, Grateful Dead, Bond, Thomas Dolby, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Vanessa Mae, Supreme Beings of Leisure, Sugar Ray, Diana Krall,.......

Ohayo gozaimasu! Another light sleeper, eh?

As for women, there's always Heart.
A shame about that excess tonnage on Ann....

I saw them in concert back in NC long ago, as well as James Taylor at Chapel Hill(when he had more of his hair).

There's always everybody's favorite fat boy band form the 70's, BTO. Doesn't one of those guys live near you?

Pablo,
actually, your list reminded me of some more older stuff that I like:

Rumours: Fl.mac: how did I forget one of may favourite albums ever?
Chris Rea: road to **** : genius.
Grateful dead, too.
Sade

Here are some more favourites of mine that I didn't mention:
Neil Young
Crosby,Still, Nash & Young
Hendrix
Marillion(nobody seems to know this band somehow)
REM

Mark C,

speaking of guitar music, I think David Gilmore(Pink Floyd), and Ritchie Blackmore(Deep Purple/Rainbow) are great.

You should really try the 1st Audioslave album
(Audioslave=Chris Cornell from Soundgarden plus the members of Rage against the machine)
...Tom Morello plays some of the most amazing guitar I've ever heard in that album(ex: on "show me how to live").

Guitar player from Tool(Adam Jones) is pretty good, too...

My musical intrests are too much to list here but I do tend to enjoy melody and gravitate twords great lead type guitar work. Gary Moore , Santana , Gary Hoey , type stuff.... alot of the old 1st wave surf instramentals were really pretty cool , good blues or blues based Rock n Roll , As Pablo said SRV .... Some of the more rhythem based stuff was pretty cool also like Malo and El Chicano .... if you ever get the chance to check out El Chicano's cover of the Carpenters song " We've only just begun " done as an instrumental with the guitar melody playing the volcals but playing in octave's.... very nicely done (circa 1973 ).....

Chet Atkin's was a guitar GOD ! Cant say enough of the man's ability to play.

Pablo.... Swing Out Sister ....the 6'27" version of Twilight World was pretty cool ! Hadnt heard of them in quite awhile.... They still around ?

My favorite is PF.

Kinda tired of Zepplin, especially Stairway to heaven....I never liked that song much anyway.

But I'll listen to most anything except for Jazz or classical.

I hate Metalica! There "Music" gives me a headache!

Calvin,
I have the "Ballads and blues" album from Gary Moore, and like almost all the songs in it, especially "midnight blues"...his intrumental "Parisian Walkways" is great, too.

Speaking of instrumentals, I really like "Albatross" by Fl.mac (those days Peter Green was still in the band, who gave his Gibson to Gary Moore, by the way, and started him off, I think)

I'm surprised by how little some guitar-music fans know about Peter Green, Gary Moore, Chet Atkins, and J.J. Cale, who started all that style that Mark Knopfler(Dire Straits) made money from!

Just about any rock or country, pre 1980.

since most of you are fans of rock and country i thought i'd pass this along.

Guitar String Maker Ernie Ball Dies at 74

Friday September 10, 2004 8:46 AM

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - Ernie Ball, a pioneer maker of rock 'n' roll guitar strings used by legions of artists from the Rolling Stones to Merle Travis, has died. He was 74.

Ball died at his home Thursday after an ongoing illness, the mortuary handling services announced.

His strings and instruments were used by music stars over the past four decades, from B.B. King to Metallica. Beginning with a small music shop in the San Fernando Valley, Ball built a business with annual sales of $40 million and a worldwide reputation. Along the way, he bucked traditional thinking in the music business.

``He changed the way people thought of guitar accessories, and how they sold and marketed them, and to this day the Ernie Ball way is the industry standard,'' his son, Sterling Ball, said in a statement.

In 1958, Ball opened a shop in Tarzana that, uniquely, sold only guitars.

``Sales reps would come in and say, 'Ern, you've got to sell clarinet reeds, drum sticks, valve oil, blah blah blah,''' Ball once recalled. ``And I'd tell them 'I just want to sell guitars.'''

In 1962, complaints from customers that they couldn't find lighter-gauge, flexible strings for their rock 'n' roll instruments prompted Ball to create and sell sets of strings he called ``Slinkys.''

They were a hit. He later branched out into instruments and accessories, buying the Music Man electric guitar company in 1985.

Today, Ernie Ball items are sold in more than 5,000 music stores in the United States and exported to more than 70 countries.

most people don't know the name but you've listened to music played on his guitar strings and guitars for decades. he is known as the inventor of the modern guitar string, before him all strings were the same. now we make over 30 variations of guitar strings.
i work for his company and was saddened to hear of his passing.

I listen to a wide range of stuff on my very high end rig. So far this morning Lords of Acid, Ministry, KMFDM, Thrill Kill Cult, Hanzel and Gretyl. Hey, I'm in a strange mood today.

Pablo,

Thanks for the link !

97tbird,

Ya I agree with you in that so many people dont have any clue about Gary Moore , Peter Green ect.
Peter Green had to have one of the most unenviable positions to fill when Eric Clapton left John Mayalls Bluesbrakers to form Cream... PG was the man who replaced Eric Clapton.

Gary Moore seems to be somewhat of a difficult one to figure out.... The people who know of him seem to either love his playing or hate it... Very little inbetween.... GM can outplay most lead guitarist for over the top , pull out the stops Rippin guiter... To many he's too much over the top... But he also has the ability to play fast and hard and then in an instant play a slow gentle little thing and then back to rip in the same song and make it sound exactly like it should.... one of my favorite all time is his closeing solo in the song " Still in love with you "... Has to be one of the most tastefully played rock solo's ever... From the Out in the fields CD. Like you I also have his Ballads and Blues CD... yup some great stuff there.

You mentioned David Gilmore... I have only one complaint about his stuff ... He doesnt play long enough !! I really wish he would play some long extended leads like Gary Moore does ! His ending solo on Comfortably Numb ( especially the clean part ) needs to be extended for about another 2 minutes !! Extrememly good guitar player .

I watched Mark Knofler play " Sultans Of Swing " on TV once.... That was a great performance ! To play finger style like that in a complicated song and sing at the same time... phew... I was amazed...

Calvin,

I wonder if you've heard the 1988 live version of "comfortably numb" by PF, which was a recording from a concert in NY (Collsseum) in 1988. The album is called "Delicate sound of thunder"(double CD, I have it)...The end-solo on "comf.numb" is much longer compared to the original and I get goose bumps everytime I hear Gilmore's playing there. it may be just what you were wanting to hear...you should really try it.
The whole album is good; has some great live performances, including "shine on..." and "wish you were here"

I did/do like Knopfler, but after I heard the "real" thing by J.J.Cale, I lost some of my respect I had for Knopfler.

btw, have you heard Gary Moore's album dedicated to Peter Green called 'Blues for Greeny"? pretty good stuff there, too.

97tbird,

No I havent heard the 1988 Live CD ... Sound exactly like something I should go and get !

I do have Blues For Greeny.... That out of phase tone is something else....not your typical PAF equipped Les Paul... The killer sustain on " The Supernatural " .. done in such a controlled manner... good stuff ! Gary was very carefull not to go over the top on this CD.

Ya know I dont have any J.J.Cale stuff at all and know next to nothing about it... Got a good recomondation of what CD would be good to get ?

Just about anything.

Fleetwood Mac, Setvie Nicks, Heart (older stuff), Iron Maiden (and the band member's solo stuff), White Zombie/Rob Zombie, Megadeth, The Cranberries, Tori Amos, Gabriela Kulka (you will hear a lot from her one day)

Not much into country, but do like "The Highwaymen", and a few others.

Not at all into (c)rap.
