My dad just called me up and wants me to help unload his new murray, rear engine riding mower. Out of intrest, I went to the murray website, and it's not maintained and working well. Under further searching, I came across that murray is expected to go out of bussiness this year and 1400 workers will lose jobs. He bought it at a large retailer. Should I tell him to take it back? Murray's always been junk in my book, and if any odd parts need to be had, they might not be availible.

take it back if within the 30 or 60 days or whatever. If they are already going to go out of business, then hes not doing anything to make it worse.
However, what odd parts could be that odd? B&S parts are B&S parts, usually relatively available. Pulleys etc., shouldnt go bad. Wires are simple on those things.
For peace of mind, Id return it.

I wouldn't worry about parts availablilty as it's pretty much standard across the board. Yes, it may be harder to track down the exact number, but like JHZR2 said, a fuel tank for a B&S engine is the same for that given application from MTD, Murray, etc...
I've been a fan of Murray products for years. It's a shame to see the corporate offices close up and the plant close down, both of which are just down the road from me...
This is truly a case study in terrible management decisions and how it can crush a company. Murray really seems to have a parallel internal "meltdown" much like Sherwin Williams paint company. I wonder if there's a synergy between how these two companies have failed aside from poor decision making? There just seems more to the story than meets the eye.

I know they are low end products...but they could have owned that niche. Poor management(80%) and overreaching unions(20%) are a terrible thing.....

I had a Murray push mower for about 10 years and never had any problems with it. Always started on first or second pull. Finally gave it away and got a Honda ( I had right hand surgery that left that hand pretty much usless and the Honda I can pull start left handed ).
