I usually like to drink it while visiting Christmas markets, but I've got some people coming over tomorrow and it's cold and snowy, so I decided to make some home made mulled wine / glogg / gluhwein.

I used this recipe with petite sirah as the base:

Turned out pretty good, but I think it could use a shot of hard liquor to elevate it a bit.

Any other good mulled wine recipes out there?

Gluhwein
1 botttle red wine, decent cheap "fruity" one
1/2 cup apple cider/juice
1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 mandarin orange sliced into segments and fork pierced
2 cinnamon sticks
1/2 tsp black peppercorns
1/2 tsp whole cloves maybe 3-5 ones
3 star anise pods

warm to steaming but do not boil
you can put spices in a tea metal pod holder so you dont need to strain out fragments

When feeling lazy we just use the McCormick Pickling Spices and add dried Mandarin Orange peels. When you heat the wine you loose all the alcohol, but we still serve kids mulled apple cider with the same recipe just because, well, they're kids.

Had some in Coventry recently, some mulled cider with gin in Edinburgh. Both excellent. I definitely plan to make some this season.

My MIL usually makes some over Xmas for gatherings. I was in Northern Ireland last year and picked up some packets of Mulled Wine Spices at a Tesco.
The spice packs were really good, best I've had, now wish I had gotten more.
